Sleeping in….Or not….

How does this work for you all? Are you up at the crack of dawn or do you like to sleep in longer? Here is the Good Question from the other night. Why are some of us early risers?

I can remember back in the day when I was home with the boys I’d have killed for more sleep. Until Toby started Kindergarten I was home with them and Paul had to get up for work during the week so I got up during the night when I had to. I would have loved to have slept in longer. Paul let me sleep in on Saturday mornings and I slept till 10 at least. I got up on Sunday mornings to take the kids to Sunday school and church.

If I slept until 10 now I don’t think I’d be able to move my body. Ideally I like to sleep till 8:30 or so but that hardly ever happens and most of the time I’m up and ready to get up at 7:30. If I wake up any earlier the day just gets too long for me and my body aches now from laying in bed. Once I wake up and know I won’t be able to go back to sleep, I jump right up. I can’t lay in bed and toss and turn.

It’s not so much I hate getting up in the morning. It’s more that I hate going to bed at night. I love the night. I used to sit up till 2 AM but of course I can’t do that anymore. I really think it’s because I can sleep in now that I can’t. Murphy’s law has reared his ugly head in this situation. I also find now as I age that sometimes the more sleep I get, the lazier I feel throughout the day.

They also say it’s really just in our genes. What about your genes? Were your parents early or late risers? What about you? Can you lay in bed once awake or do you get right up?

When I was younger I would sleep and sleep and sleep!! Sleeping in was all I did. That all changed once Hunter came. I thought I would never be able to handle getting up in the middle of the night and so early. Well I was great at it. Fast forward to today- I’m very happy when Hunter sleeps till 7:30-8ish. On the weekends Jason lets me sleep in until 9-9:30. Sounds funny that 9 is sleeping in. But I take what I can get. I honestly don’t think I could sleep in any later than that. Boy have things changed!! oh and I’m not really a night owl either!

I have been a night owl since I was a kid. I’ve tried to change, but ultimately I ended up getting my jobs to cater to my weird hours. If you work until 2am, they are more forgiving about not seeing you until 10am the next morning.

Having kids has forced me to at least get up by 8am, because they have stuff they are supposed to be doing by 9 every morning (earlier on weekends). I do what I have to and it’s not as painful as I thought it would be. But it sure would be nice to sleep in some day. I used to sleep until noon or later on weekends, before kids. It was so nice.

As for my parents – I really don’t know if I’m like them genetically, because when I was a kid, my dad had to be at work by 8am and my mom had 6 kids plus a job. So like me, they might have wanted to sleep later, but had no choice in the matter. Now that they are retired, they have extremely weird sleep patterns, so I don’t know what to make of that.

Well this is a timely discussion!Ive been telling my husband we NEED to get our butts out of bed earlier. He is off work in winter and of coarse I dont work any longer so he LOVES to sleep in.I never was one to sleep in,even as a teenager.I can remember sitting up for hours at friends house waiting for them to get up,when we had sleepovers.Im on a medication that makes me sleep later in the morning but I hate it!I feel Ive wasted my morning if I sleep to late.Problem is now I stay up late too.I dont really ever look forward to going to bed.I often say how I cant wait to get this night over and wake up in the morning already.Wes thinks Im nuts!I just dont care to be in bed.

When I was a teenager I could sleep 12 hours. Now if I make 6 hours a night, I am well rested. But last week I slept 18 hours!! I had a concussion because I banged my head against a monkey bar at school.. I know, not smart 😦 But I was so surprised I slept that long. Sometimes, when I come home, I take a 1/2 hour nap, and that is needed otherwise I fall asleep on the couch in the evening.

I can stay up pretty late (as you can see, it’s 10:30 right now… I’m waiting for them to call a late start at school. They know they’re going to do it, why don’t they just DO it already so I can go to bed????? Anyway, where was I? Oh, yeah, sleep), but I usually wake pretty early. “Late” for me to get up most mornings, if allowed, would be 8, however, I have to get up at 6 to get Josh off to school. And i have to admit, that alarm comes pretty early when I’m up noodling around on the ‘net.

I function best with a solid 8 hours, and I try to get that. I’ll go through periods though, like now, where I just stay up late for whatever reason. It seems like the times that I’m more stressed, I stay up late, because I don’t feel like I can get anything productive done after about 8 at night, so I play around on the internet or watch a movie to unwind.

Every weekend in a blue moon, my family lets me sleep in. Even then, I’m usually awake by 8, but I lay in bed, being very very quiet, and just enjoy the moment. Because pretty soon, there’s a little blonde torpedo heading for me.

For me, 10:30pm is way too early for sleeping. I can’t always sleep even at 1am. I have this “second wind” going on most evenings. But even on those rare occasions when I am able to go to sleep “early,” I still can’t get up any easier in the morning.

One thing that helps me sleep is eating a nice big snack. I really need to stop doing that at night!

I am an early riser, but I like to sleep in once in a while. Sleeping in for me is about 9am. When I sleep longer than that, I feel like my whole morning is wasted. I go to bed by 10:30 most nights and it seems to work out ok. I wish I could have slept in this morning!

I used to be such a morning sleeper. I could sleep till noon easy. Obviously once you have a kid, you can’t do that. Well, I guess you could but that wouldn’t be very nice.

When Bailey was a baby and needed night time feeding and changes, I always got up. Jason worked, I stayed home. I thought that was the fairest thing to do. When the weekend rolled around, he always let me sleep in until I wanted to get up. It’s still like that. But Jason always welcomed the chance at having alone time with him. It’s different now, Bailey is almost 11 and we don’t have to get up when he does. Now, on the weekends Bailey is always up by 7:30, he’s our early bird. Jason is usually up by 8:30, 9 at the latest. I like to have the bed all to myself for about half an hour. I don’t like sleeping in till 10 anymore. I feel like I have wasted my morning.

Over the last few years, we’d stay up till midnight. Jason has to be at work at 6am. The older we get the earlier to bed we go. Jason and I are in bed most nights by 10:30 now. Bailey gets up at 6:30am, he likes to have some time to wake up, watch TV by himself, eat, get dressed…do his morning routine. I get up around 7:20ish. Spend that 45 minutes with him and take him to the bus.

I know my dad was an early bird. My mom is too, and the older I get the more of one I become. My oldest sister is the earliest riser I have ever met. 5am, and she’s up, bathed and ready to go, no where. lol
