I officially have my own smell!!

Do you ever wonder why a certain smell can make you think of something from when you were a child?  I can remember the way my grandparents house smelled and whenever I smell that smell, it’s like I just walked into their house.  I can smell musk oil and I could swear my mom walked into the room.  Old Spice and Brut belong to my dad.  Dial soap, the ORANGE bar, no other color!!, belong to my husband.  The perfume Charlie, reminds me of my best girlfriend from Jr. High.  So what it is that does that?

Can someone sit next to you in a movie theater and the smell of them make you feel ill??  Cooking smells, good or bad, remind you anything?  Roses, lilac’s?  Fresh cut grass or rain?

I have a cousin who loves the way my clothes smell.  Whether it’s my clothes or me, I’m not sure but the smell reminds her of me.  I sent her a goody box once with some clothes I didn’t wear anymore and I knew she would love them so I included them in the box.  She told me she wore them for days without washing them because they reminded her of me.

Enclosed here are a few links if your interested in reading about smell and memory.

I had my oldest grandson Bailey with me for the night last night.  I had a sleeping bag here for the kids and it had gotten to small for them so we got a new one.  I keep telling them not to grow, but so far, they aren’t listening!!  I had washed the new sleeping bag and hung it outside to dry.  I told him “smell how good this smells Bailey” and he put his nose in it and said “it smells like you grandma.”  I asked him if that was good or bad and he got a HUGE smile on his face and said “it’s good Grandma!”

So, I officially have my own smell!!  I’m walking on air!!

I smell great grandma’s all the time. old pool table, wash tub, closet of potatoes and a freezer full of butterscotch ripple ice cream. life on the farm.. I can out a smell to anything the best is depending on the time of year and day fresh cut grass means golf with grandma, baseball with friends or friday night football games. And my wife says I have a smell. I love watching her smell my shirts or pillow cases and see a comfortable look on her face.

This is so cute Joy. Your grandson sounds so sweet. Smell defiantly reminds me of things and people. I had an aunt who had incense all over her house. Must have been a 70’s thing or something but everything in her house (including her) smelled like patchouli. I personally couldn’t stand that smell.

My dad has severe allergies so we grew up with nothing much smelling in our house. Fresh mown grass, rain, flowers…natural smells remind me of certain people and many things I‘ve done.

    I liked this post.

I used to have a smell….I remember when I was dating my soon to be husband long distance he wrote me a letter describing my smell. He started listing all the various products that he smelled together in the one smell that was me. At that point I had never realized I had a smell at all, that was why I kept applying beauty products in the first place.

Unfortunately at this stage of my life I don’t have time to apply much of anything to my body. The only smells my house has are the smell of poopy diapers in the garbage, wet underwear in my daughter’s bedroom closet, damp washcloths from constant face washings, handsoaps that are constantly reapplied, and this horrible fruity chapstick that my daughter received for Christmas, followed by whatever we ate for dinner last night and the general odor of stale beer over top of it all as my husband and I try to cope and remember the days when we had nothing better to do but get lost in the smell of each other…

oops…. 😉 that’s how we got into this mess in the first place!

In all seriousness though, I know what you mean Joy. I’ve had friends that the second I walk into their homes I find it comforting. I’ve even gone so far as to ask them what they use in their homes to create that smell, but I’ve never been able to recreate it myself. When I do find products with a scent that excites me I hold on to them.

I look forward to the day when my kids are older and we’re done with the grotesque body fluids stage of our lives and move on to more pleasant smells. Or at the very least that I lived in a climate where I could leave the windows open year round!

Heh heh, it’s cute when I notice my daughters sniffing me. I totally know what you mean.

I have come to the conclusion that “my smell” is downy and I hang my clothes outside to dry. Year round. Yes, they freeze in the winter but they freeze dry and are dry in an hour after I bring them in. They smell delicious in the winter. Since I smoke, I kind of thought that might be “my smell” might be smoke so that’s why this makes me so happy. A lot of people since I posted this told me it’s the downy.

Now you have me wondering if I have a smell…guess I’ll be asking my kids after school. The smell of lilacs makes me think of my grandparents, and the smell of Russian Olive Trees makes me think of spring. A great post to get me remembering!

That is too cute. That boy I’ll tell you, says some of the cutest things. By the way Downy reminds me of you too. My husband has a smell I can’t get enough of. It’s so comforting. I can’t really describe it though. My mom smells like a candle shop. Every time I walk into her house it’s like I’m walking into The Bath and Body shop. She’ll send clothes for the kids and I smell them instantly. Makes me miss her.

What I think is so funny about smells is that you don’t notice someone’s smell until you get home! Some homes do have a definite smell when you walk in, but most don’t. Have you ever unpacked your suitcase from being gone and thought, wow my clothes smell funny! It’s that person’s smell!!!! My grandma’s house in MO has a smell and I think it was the Spray and Wash she used. EVERYBODY has a smell, let’s just hope they aren’t bad ones!!!

This is a very cute post. It’s brought back a lot of memories. My mom wins the Noxema smell. She uses it morning and night and I always think of her when I smell that. My dad is old spice and soap. My grandma wins with the PineSol award.

Thanks for this one Joy. I loved it. You downy woman you 🙂
