Why are the majority of us scared of the dentist??

I had to take my daughter to the dentist yesterday to get 2 teeth pulled and get a permanent retainer put it.  All day Sunday she was making herself sick and was getting very nervous about it.  I didn’t tell her but even I am scared and hate to go to the dentist.  Why is it that we are so scared?  I don’t understand what started it.  I’m not scared to go to the doctor and neither are my kids but mention the dentist and look out!

Why is this??

Maybe it’s the way you can be happily sitting there minding your own business when WOW! The dentist suddenly, without warning, hits a nerve. When you go to the doctor, you pretty much know what’s going to hurt and when and why.

The other thing is, if its an upper tooth he’s drilling, he’s getting so close to our BRAIN! Jjzzzzzzzz jjzzzzzzzz yikes! And you can’t even say “excuse me doc, but why do I feel a breeze in my cerebrum” because your mouth is full of stuff to stop you from biting the dentist’s fingers off.

About a year ago, I had a dental hygienist who kept ruthlessly jabbing me. Each time, I moved my ears since I couldn’t say anything. Finally the hygienist said, “ha ha, you move your ears whenever I hurt you” like it was cute. Think she tried to be a bit more gentle after that? Nah. Oh well, I’m glad I gave her a laugh.

I hate the dentist.. It didnt bother me until Last year when I had to go have a root canal done.. It was the first thing i’d ever had to ahve done and it hurt so badly. The pain afterwards was horrible and It lasted a few days. The dentist said that wasn’t “normal” when he called to check on me but I was in so much pain.. I need to go back now to have a few things done but i’m scared to death to go..

I used to be really afraid of the dentist. I had gone 10 years or so without going. My front tooth was chipped and so many of my teeth were rotten that my tongue was always sore from hitting them. Sometimes I couldn’t talk or even eat. I think it really affected my mood since my mouth always hurt.

One morning I woke up and KNEW something was really wrong and of course it was a Sat and nothing was open. By Sunday it looked like I had a golf ball in the side of my cheek. Everything hurt. Even my hair hurt. I was just miserable. Monday morning I called one of those “sedation dentists” and they got me right in. I never did use sedation but I went there at least once a week for months and now my teeth look great and I feel great.

I’m not sure what it was that I was so afraid of but I fell in love with my dentist. He was so gentle and I had a lot of work done. I think with me, I’m such a procrastinator. I will always call and make an appt “tomorrow!” I’m that way with haircuts or anything I have to call and make an appt for. I always try and make my next appt before I leave wherever I am. That seems to help me.

One time when I was having a tooth drilled the drill bit (don’t know the technical name of it) fell off and hit the back of my throat. My natural reaction was to swallow.

The poor dentist. He panicked. Sent me to have ex rays and kept apologizing profusely. Sure enough, when the ex rays came back, there was the little drill bit in my stomach. I guess it just “passed” naturally…

I think the dentist saw a lawsuit in the future which is why he panicked. I’m not that type of person though. I wasn’t harmed in any way…unless you count all the teasing I have received from family and friends since.

I just had this conversation with my husband. He told me to make an dentist appointment for our son and myself for the following week. And my first reaction was there’s NO WAY I’m going to the dentist but I’ll make Bailey an appointment! I had to go to the dentist every month for 3 1/2 years when I was younger because I had braces. I hated it, the sound, the smell. I didn’t go back to the dentist until I was 25 and surprisingly my teeth weren’t bad but they said I should get my wisdom teeth pulled. I never went back!!! I’ve never had a tooth pulled in my life. So my husband says to me today, “if you don’t go you will end up like mom and it’ll cost us a lot of $.” So I’ll make the appointment and maybe this time i won’t get scared and cancel it.

The dentist? really people are we still 5. A little pain for a lot of pleasure. nothing is better then walking out of there with swollen lips and clean teeth. The problem is probably the fact that people don’t get nitrous oxide. LAUGHING GAS. I don’t get anything done without it. I can’t wait to go to the dentist, I don’t care what for. As long as I have nitrous I don’t care what they do.
