Sometimes Summer Sucks

You know, sometimes summer sucks!  It’s actually one of my favorite times of year up until it’s time to find a swimsuit!  I own a lot of them, but I don’t like most of them.  At the time I bought them I liked them, and then I look at them later and think “what the hell was I thinking?” especially after seeing pictures of myself!

Does anyone else have a hard time finding a suit that you like, looks good on, and is actually wearable?  I have ordered them, got them in department stores, and at Target, but am not completely happy with any of them.  It’s like people who design suits are thinking of 12 year olds that have no boobs or curves yet or grandma’s who want to cover everything up!  I’m tall (very tall I guess!) and have a long torso so finding a one piece that doesn’t break the bank is impossible.  Tankini’s are a great idea but I have yet to find one that gives me the support I need without having thick straps or doesn’t smoosh my chest to nothing.  So, I have 2 piece suits and I’m not always feeling great in those either!  Then try and find a color/pattern that looks good on!  Heaven’s to Betsy it shouldn’t be this hard!

Why the anger?  Because I just ordered a suit from VS that looked cute in the catalog, but when I put it on was not so much!  The bottoms fit, but I looked like I had torpedo boobs a) because the cut of the top and b) because it was too big even though I bought my bra size.  So, that one is going back and I’m out $20 for s/h.  Oh, and then I ordered one from AE and it’s really cute if I was 13 and didn’t mind my butt hanging out and the sides of my boobs showing.  I think each year I order at least 3 suits and try on dozens more.  Anyone have a great experience with them?  Anyone have any suggestions as to where to find a good one?  Now that it’s the middle of July I’m happy that swimsuit season is almost over, but then there’s always next year and the viscous cycle starts again.

Check out Speigel. They have a Shape FX range that is really great. Also, once in a while at Marshalls and TJ Max they have suits that are inexpensive from Carol Wior. You can also find these suits much cheaper on ebay. They are built for long torsos and really accentuate the positives depending on your body type. There is one more type of suit that always works for me and Im trying to think of the name brand of it… Miraclesuit! Its awesome and they have it in all body lengths. Try those. 🙂

OMG Sue I feel your pain so much. I have never been excited to buy a swim suit in my whole life because I’ve never been comfortable with my upper part. Last summer was my first summer since my surgery so I was so excited to buy a suit. I found the cutest suit at Tommy Hilfiger, paid $60 for it and it fit perfectly. Fast forward to 4th of July weekend, we were going to spend the day on the lake the family so I put it on. And it falls off!! Well yea it should have I guess since I’ve lost 5 sizes. Which I’m happy about but know I’m out of swim suit and have to go on the hunt again. I’m going straight back to Tommy, they have the cutest suits and are great quality. Maybe you should try there, Sue…I can get you %50 off:)

Repeat after me: There is NO such thing as a good swimsuit. They rate right up there with evil chickens.

I have a few bathing suits I do like but believe it or not, I got them when I WASN’T looking for one. Once your looking, you can never find one because you “have to.” But then, I don’t buy the same kind you guys do.

I wore a 2-piece on a school-related outing when I was 13, and suddenly felt horribly self-conscious. That was the end of bathing suits for me, until I was somewhere in my late 20’s. Then I said, darnit, time to grow up and stop being so shy, and I bought a halfway decent one-piece. But, I’ve only worn it 3 times max since then (going on 15 years), and I can’t find one I like better. I really wish I could find one that covers a bit more without looking like it’s a cult uniform or a fat lady suit (no offense to anyone, but those around my age will know exactly what I’m talking about).

Generally, I don’t go in the water unless I’m allowed to wear shorts and a t-shirt. It’s a bummer, because I do like swimming – though I could do without all the chlorine and such.

So yeah, I feel your pain. Why don’t they have any respect for what ordinary women really want? Why is it that they offer men everything from a g-string to knee-length trunks, but they think every woman under 200 lbs wants to show off 99% of her skin??

I feel just fine is a swim suit, however getting them to fit right is another thing, i have double D’s and its not fun trying to find things to fit my upper part, and I would never get in to a 2 piece again, unless i had my stomach was flat, but, not right now anyhow. I usually just wear, my booty shorts and a tank top, when I swim, or tan.

I got one from Tommy last year and I love/loved it until I saw pic’s of myself and it looks like my breasts are halfway to my knees!!! Maybe it’s all in my head and I don’t look that bad, but I was not impressed! I’ve seen Miraclesuits b/4 but they seem to be spendy. I want a cute 2 piece that my butt cheeks don’t hang out of and gives me the support I want without big old straps!

  12. Joy says:

Sue, I’m going to smack you upside the head!! None of us like pics of ourselves and you look GREAT in everything you put on!

  13. Amber says:

Thats why you get the miracle suits off ebay… 1/4 the price!

I know you said you had tried Target before, but I bought the first suit I have actually LIKED in years, and the first suit that made me comfortable with my body post kids. It is a two piece, but not in the way that people picture because my mid-section is not shown. The top is a tank top with good support and reaches below my bellyline, the shorts are boy shorts and come rather low, mid thigh, so they hide my horribly fat thighs. I took the time to actually try it on in the store (something I rarely do). Resolved to actually spend money on it this year, (instead of buying the $20 onepiece that makes me look like a whale I splurged and spent $40 altogether). I also learned that I needed a different size on my top than my bottom, something I couldn’t have had in a one piece style.

I just hope it lasts me for a while. It seemed to tuck in just the right places to make me still feel young, but not make me look pathetic. 🙂

The suit I’m wearing this year is from Target and I do like that one (at this moment!) the best. It does suck to try them on in the store, but it does help to see it in a 3 way mirror! I’ve noticed too that when you spend a little more it’s better quality and seems to last. I’ll have to check out ebay….
