Clipping coupons

Do you clip coupons?  The reason I ask this is because I became aware that one of my sister in laws saved $175.00, yes, you read that right ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FIVE dollars last week using coupons!!  What the heck???  How does one do that?

I’ve yet to talk to her so I thought I’d ask you.  I never clip anymore.  I did back in the day when the boys were young though.  I used to get a little thrill when they were double for anything under a dollar.  Or buy one, get one free.  I can remember when my mother in law would shop at three different stores a week and would only buy something at one store or the other if it was under a penny different.  No matter what, she bought the product at the cheapest price.  My husband does use coupons for my cigarettes though.  But hey, they come in the mail.  I don’t have to go on a hunt to find them.

But that’s a lot of money.  Mind you, I would never go from store to store to store to store nor would I “look” for the coupons either.  My time is to valuable and all that jazz.  I guess you can go to websites and print them out.  Wow, I didn’t even have a computer way back when.  When things were tight and I was feeding two boys who were always hungry, I would go through the Sunday paper and clip them out for Cub and  Rainbow which where I lived, were right across the road from each other and go and get the “free” thing of the week and use all the good coupons but I haven’t done that in years.  That’s as far as I went.

I’ve also seen women like this on Good Morning America and shows of the like and it seems to me they spend all their time looking for these coupons and then going from store to store.  I would never have wanted to do that.

Do you do this??  Do you know anyone like this??

I rarely bother with coupons. If I happen to see one for an item I would have bought anyway, I will clip it. That’s about it.

I have a friend who is a maniac for coupons and sales. The problem is, she ends up buying all kinds of stuff she never would have bought, just because “it was a good price.” She has like 30 times as much stuff as I have because she thinks she is finding all these great deals. And a lot of the food she buys goes in the garbage.

I am very cheap, and that’s why I do NOT clip coupons. I don’t want to be tempted to buy something I don’t need or really want.

The downside of this is that there are times when I do buy stuff “on impulse” where I could have saved a few cents or a few bucks if I’d brought a coupon with. But, I still feel I save more money by not clipping coupons and sticking (mostly) to my regular purchases.

I don’t clip coupons either. I have coupons and get them in the mail, but I always forget them at home or forget to use them at the store! I like that a lot of places have gone to the specials of the week so you don’t have to have the coupon to save the money. Someday when I really want to save $$$ I will clip…

rarely use coupons. If I see a good deal i’ll use one.. if not.. i’m not going to bother.. I refuse to waste gas running from store to store.. and i’m not hauling hte kids from store to store..

I do know. A few weeks ago I saved $48 at cup foods. Then I get gas coupons from cub and use them at Holiday when I fill up. Never used to but you can save a lot of money!!!

  5. Joy says:

$48 is a lot to save though Shane.

I clip coupons. The only reason I buy the Sunday paper is for the coupons, ok and the comics! I usually save about $50 per shopping trip with coupons. But I don’t buy something just because I have a coupon for it. I only buy it if I need it.
I get my habit from my mom who always clipped and used coupons. When she passed away back in 1997 I kept her coupon collection. Back then the coupons never expired and I am still using some of them even today!

  7. Smilf says:

I don’t clip coupons normally. Mainly the coupons that I use are for restaurants or stores like Limited Too or whatever store stepdaugher is into at the time. I am not a fan of clipping to go to the store though because it seems like then I buy things i wouldn’t normally buy which defeats the purpose. That is just me though. : )

I see them in the paper and always say, wow what a great deal and I may even cut them out. But they never make it to the store. The only coupon I really use is for my Olay face wash and that’s because it’s very expensive.

I’d like to use more coupons but I just don’t have access to them. I get a weekly newspaper but I have no grocery store in my town. I only shop once a month or so. I also really only buy staples since I raise my own meat and grow my own veggies and can them as well as fruit. I may go online to see if any are available to me once I get my computer lined up with the new satellite dish and will be online more. For now, I just don’t have time to seek them out. I do know people who do this. I am not a frivolous buyer or shopper and wouldn’t ever buy anything just because I have a coupon. But, there again, I do know people who think anything on sale is a good deal even if they aren’t going to use it.

“My time is to valuable and all that jazz” I feel ya sister! I used to clip when I was younger and my children were small; but as I get older, I find there are lot’s of things I don’t do anymore, which to me waste too much of my valuable time. I’m glad to have stopped to smell and enjoy the roses, instead of always planting them; never enjoying the harvest. After 40, I finally realized life is just too short to be clipping darn coupons on a beautiful Sunday morning. Sheesh . . . $175.00 is a lot of loot though. Just how many coupons do I need to cut out to save $175.00? Will I have to buy expensive items that I normally do not buy; like gourmet TV dinners or Grape Nut cereal? Please let me know – I’m just dying to find out if I perhaps can start saving for the Bahamas next summer by cutting out coupons (lol, but I’m serious). Blessing to you and yours. . . CordieB.

  11. Joy says:

Thanks for stopping by CordieB. Please do so again. I will let you know when I find out all the coupons she cut out to save that. It’s a lot to save.

I should clip coupons though I don’t use a lot of packaged food. I mostly buy vegetables, fruit and meat. But I do buy condiments , yogurt and bread and a few weight watcher snacks. My problem is forgetting to use them once I clip them. I just bought all new canvas bags last week for grocery shopping and haven’t used them once because I keep forgetting. I even had one on the front seat today and didn’t use it. I do go from store to store to get meat on sale. I have saved a lot of money on meat. If it’s on a good sale I buy a lot of it and freeze it. I don’t even get the newspaper anymore because I read it online. I guess I could go to websites and look for on line coupons. Let us know how your Sister-in-law did it. I would be curious.

  13. Joy says:

Thanks for stopping by Joan. I will ask her and write another post since so many people are curious. My youngest son said she probably did her shopping for a month. She also has three teenagers so she probably buys a lot of snacks and lunch products now with school not is session. In other words, she buys things I wouldn’t.

I’ll be back with an update.

I tend not to use store coupons…for most of the reasons that others mentioned above. I always forget to bring them along, they’re usually for products I don’t normally buy, and I tend to read the newspaper online so I don’t get the coupon inserts much anymore.

I will use diaper coupons and other coupons for products that I buy all the time.

I more often use discount coupons for clothing stores etc. The Children’s Place, JCPenney, etc frequently offer coupons for 10%, 20% off your order, and sometimes they can be used online.

And I always, always, always, when shopping online hunt for a coupon code to enter in the discount box before submitting my order. Just this week I saved $40 ordering new curtains from JCPenney that way.

  15. Joy says:

You know Jen, I’d forgotten about those kinds of coupons. I use those all the time. I shop so much more online that I do in actual stores but totally forgot about those.

  16. Ali says:

I think I’m like most of the others. I mean to use them. I clip them and then leave them laying on my counter when I go to the store. I also have a lot of my groceries delivered so I can’t use them with that company.

  17. smilinglight says:

I like to clip coupons too. But i always find that i get coupons only i don’t use! 😦
