No, they don’t really bother me that much. I am NOT a sweet person. My older daughter is just like me. But little sis – she gets devoured, and she is allergic. At first I was worried, but I just watched to see how she would heal from the first bites, and she did fine. She seems to develop some immunity the more she gets bitten. They still feast on her, but it doesn’t seem to bother her at all.

People do think I am the worst mom in the world for sitting by and letting her get bitten. As weird as it may sound, I feel it’s best for her. If the bites don’t bother her, I don’t feel comfortable putting freaky chemicals on (or inside) her. And I don’t like killing bugs either. (And no, I didn’t vote for Al Gore!)

There have been cases of West Nile virus here, so we try to remember to put on bug spray if we are going to be out after dusk much.

  4. Joy says:

No. I hate bug spray. When the bugs come out, I go in! I hate the way it feels and hate the way it smells.

  5. I am slowly overcoming my dislike of bug spray, though I still refer to it as “poisoning the children.” (I have a bit of a dramatic streak). We moved to this place in North Carolina where the mosquitos never take a break. We get bitten in the middle of the day! And my kids itch like crazy, and the baby scratches until the bites bleed, and we are basically trapped inside all the time if I don’t “poison” the kids. So a couple of times a week I have been relenting and letting them out. You can see the spots I missed with the poison, such as the edges of the baby’s face, because they are covered with bites. It is a nightmare.

The irony: I do not itch, or even get a lasting mark, from bug bites. *Sigh*

Ah ok it took me a while to fathom what you were asking for here bug spray kills bugs, it is what we aim at them causing them to do backflips and shakes eventually croaking one last breath and collapsing. That is our bug spray and I am allergic to it, makes my chest close and then I do the backflips and shakes… not pretty.

We have to use bug houdini but I use Citronella oil, both good for the skin and makes you invisible to the creatures! Here we have big ones yurgh!

I hate to wear it but there are times I have to. I don’t show any bare skin though during these times so I put it all on my clothes. Never on skin.

  8. Sue says:

I remember being doused(?) in it when I was a kid so we could go out and play! Now, I don’t wear it unless I can put it on my clothes, but I really don’t like it. When the bugs come out we go in just like Joy said!

I do. I can’t stand bug bites and we are out at night a lot with softball and just hanging out in the backyard, and I cover the kids in it. I hate the smell of most but I found one that smells good. It’s by OFF familycare. I have to shower at the end of the night though.

  10. Ali says:

Not really unless I have to. We really don’t have that many bugs here and I’m not outdoors when they are.

I do wear it but less and less the older I get. It’s hard to grow up in the Adirondack Mountains and not have used some. When I was a kid my father used to put the roll on stuff on me that was 100% deet. I didn’t use it often, only when we were going actually into the woods during mosquito season, otherwise they’re so bad you can’t move. My dad was a lumberjack for awhile and would use that stuff when working in the woods.

Most of the time around here we just dress appropriately. It means long sleeves in the evenings and pants, often a hat as well. While you might be warm in the summer you won’t be bitten.

The other thing you quickly learn is not to wear ANY bath products. That includes lotions, hairsprays, etc. The bugs LOVE the stuff. The cleaner YOU are the more likely you’ll get bit. We typically don’t have a problem while camping because you’re often near a campfire where you get good and smoky (woodsmoke tends to keep them away), and once you get a layer of dirt on you you’re usually much better off.

Working at a summer camp while growing up, we’d laugh at the girls that would wake up every morning, wash their hair with nice smelling shampoo, and then put on Bath & Body Works lotion or spray. You could literally watch the bugs swarm around them by breakfast time. You quickly learn to sacrifice beauty for comfort.
