I realize I’m a total putz but I wonder how long it takes you to shower? I’m in the shower for more than 15 minutes but under 20. Is that long? I’ve been teased about it before and on way more occasions than I can count, I’ve ran out of hot water.
By the time I do all the things I do in there, that much time has passed. If there’s a song on the radio that I love, I might even hold my shampoo like a mic and give a little impromptu concert! I shave each and every shower no matter if it’s summer or winter. You see, I do it for me and nobody else. It has nothing to do if someone is going to see my legs or if I have to wear shorts, it’s just the way I am.
I know if I hopped in, washed, washed and conditioned my hair that I could be out in under 5 minutes but I can’t shower like that. As I’ve gotten older, I can’t shower daily, at least in the winter because my skin will get so dry it hurts. So, I’m an every other day shower-er.
I never take baths. The rare ones I take are if I’m so cold I can’t warm up or I just want to lay and read and will stand up to shower after I’m done. There’s something about washing myself and then sitting in my own dirt. I know there are many who would disagree with me but hey, it’s just the way I think.
So, how long is it for you?
I can go for as short as 3-5 minutes if I’m in a hurry, but I prefer to take at least 10-15 minutes – longer if I wash my hair – and that’s without shaving. It is a relaxation thing for me – probably because I am usually cold, that nice warm shower is almost like a spa visit. I hate to rush through things that are for my personal comfort. If I’m spending the rest of the day working for others, darnit, nobody better grudge those extra 5-10 minutes once a day for myself. In fact, in the days when I used to have to go to an office every day, I would thank God every morning for the luxury of a warm shower. It was my most appreciated comfort.
I can’t shave too often because my skin is too sensitive. If I shave on the same day as I wash my hair, I will have a reaction to the shampoo, and if I shave twice in a week, I may get an itchy rash, which in turn will prevent me from shaving for weeks. No thanks. It may sound gross to some, but I really can’t help it. I keep promising myself to go for laser hair removal so I can hopefully simplify that aspect of my life.
5 minutes tops. I get in.. do my stuff, get out. Now when I bathe.. I linger and soak and relax.
I might have you beat Joy, I would say atleast 15-20 min. I think showers are supposed to be relaxing. I couldn’t take a shower in 5 min. or less. I like to listen to the radio and if I’m almost done and a good song comes on I’ll stay in there longer and listen to it.
I dont think thats long at all. it takes me forever to wash my hair.. im in there atleast 15 minutes.. plus its the only quiet time i get..LOL
I shower for max 5 minutes and when I’m emotional or sad then I don’t know I just stand under the water and let it flow over my body. I haven’t bathed in years but I do like the feeling of the warm water surrounding me but often have a shower first (don’t laugh)
Yes Shane showers are sooo relaxing!! Ask Jason and he’ll tell you I take 30 minutes…it’s more like 20. I shower everyday and bathe very often but hey, SanityFound you’re not alone I too shower first. I like to be clean b4 I soak in a tub of my own water and rinse when I’m done. I shave everyday, b/c I have to not b/c I want to. I HATE the feeling of stubbles. Yesterday I was, well, lets put it this way, I had 7 kids one of which was 2 months old and cried for 2 hours straight. I was pooped on, puked on and who knows what else!! I did not have time for a shower until they all left at 6pm!!! Yea I was in there for at least half an hour!! Turn the radio on my favorite station, and turned myself back into a human again!! It’s amazing what a shower can do for you!!
In and out, quick! If I didn’t reek so bad so fast, I would probably skip it altogether! 😉
I’m with you regarding baths. Let that filth, that used to be only on the surface of my skin, just soak into my pores! Bleh!
ewwww u dirty
I usually take 15-20 minutes during the work week and 30 minutes on the weekend!!!!
I LOVE a hot shower. It’s my time to cleanse my soul, have quiet time to reflect (no radio for me), and I actually tend to think and remember more things I have to do when I’m in the shower than anywhere else.
I don’t shave in the winter. I don’t see the need. I shave once a week in the summer or more often if needed. I have blond hair which helps. My husband could care less if I shave so I don’t worry about it. I definitely don’t do it for me. I probably was a hippie in another life…
I’ve always loved a long hot shower. While growing up our hot water tank could never take it and I’d always use up all the hot water in the house. Sometimes in the winter our pipes would freeze since it often would be -30 where we lived and all of that shower water would end up in the basement. That led to a REAL happy father let me tell you! He got so sick of my long showers I even remember him turning off the water on me once just to get me out of the bathroom!!
Now as an adult in my own house I relish the fact that I can shower as long as I like and I do. I’ve been known to shower at 3am if I can’t sleep. It will usually relax me.
And nothing beats a shower with my hubby before work 😉 It can be a great way to start the day and the only 20 minutes without the kids we get!
When I became so disabled that I could barely take a shower, my daughter had a plumber friend of hers come in and rip my bathroom apart. At the same time my furnace had broken and I was without hot water for 5 months. I was living alone with no money because I physically couldn’t work any more. My daughter had a new furnace installed and in my bathroom she had a shower installed that I could sit down in. It has two shower heads one of which you can take down and hold in your hand. She had a new toilet put in that is higher than most to make it easier to get off of. She had a washer and dryer installed in the bathroom so I could do laundry. Before my washer and dryer were in the cellar and I couldn’t get down the stairs and she would come over every weekend and do my laundry.
I had to explain all that so you could realize why I love my shower so much and my daughter who also paid my mortgage at the time. I finally gave her my house and they moved in with me and now we are a happy family.
Because I can sit in the shower I take long ones. I never rush. I let the hot water pour all over me and savor it because I remember taking a shower in cold water. Thank goodness it was summer then. I also use products now. Before I only used shampoo and soap. My daughter buys me all sorts of stuff for my hair at the Aveda salon where I got my hair cut just yesterday. I used to have bad callouses on my heels but no more because she bought me products to get rid of them.
I have an angel for a daughter and a great shower too.
Joy you so have to go read this Differences Between Men and Women omg I can’t stop laughing
Oooo I think I’m in your spam box for sharing a link 😦 its really good go check it out – can’t believe I am in amongst all that viagra now sheesh
I can shower and shave my legs in 10 minutes. Basically that is all the time I get before the kids start fighting! One day I hope to be able to actually sit in a tub and relax again!
I always take a shower before I sit in the tub and then I rinse off again afterwards.
Only like 10minutes to get shower clothe and make up, I am not the girly girly type.
I’m a girly girl type. I can do all that in maybe 20 minutes but I might look a little messed up!!! Hey Candi 7 more days!!
Hey Joy: I take about five minutes in the shower, and I am like SF in that I really appreciate the warm, running water on my head when I am feeling upset or emotional about something. I much prefer baths, although I don’t get the chance, or rather, take the chance, to sit and relax in one very often. I don’t rinse before and after, but I usually don’t take a bath as my way to do my cleaning ritual, more for relaxation, after I have already had a shower for the day…….. Usually when I need a bath, I have a glass of wine with me, hot water, and lots of tears……
And, am I the only one who does not have a radio in their bathroom or shower??? I feel deprived…..
Jennifer, I often get up during the night if I can’t sleep or have a sore neck or something and shower. Those kinds of showers are really relaxing.
I love my radio on. It’s the only place I can sing and not get booed off stage! I can really put on a terrific concert in there. I was Whitney Houston the other day singing “All At Once.” It was great.
I have the same routine for my shower that I’ve always had. I hate stubble so I do shave every single time. It doesn’t feel like a shower if I don’t. 5 minutes, sheesh, I have to think for 5 minutes about which way I’m going to turn first!! Like I said, I’m a putz!!
You know I am just adoring all this ammunition… tsk tsk I am shocked it is being handed to me on a platter phew *grins big*

I can not be blamed… nn
Oh my yes, aren’t you EVER the innocent one!
I love this back and forth banter. This is the best blog!
I shower many times during the day. I have showers in my barns and shower every time I leave them. I love to lay in my hot tub but I do take long showers to relax during my “last” shower and I also shave daily. I hate the feeling of not.
I always make sure everyone else is done in the bathroom before I get in there. I shower for 15-20 minutes and I like hot water so my cue to get out is if the hot water starts to run out and the shower gets progressivley colder…and of course I shower when the kids are off to school so that I can enjoy the time alone with my thoughts and my pathetic singing voice! 😉
Hey, thanks for stopping by A Broad.
Typically I shower for between 5 and 10 minutes everyday. Once in a while, if I have time or I’m cold or not feeling well, I’ll shower for 15 minutes or so – the hotter the better – or I’ll take a bath with some tea tree oil in it. I can’t hear very well with the shower and bathroom fan running, so I don’t usually listen to music in the shower. I do like music while I’m in the bath, though.
You have the most interesting posts, Joy. They revolve around topics that almost everyone has in common. Very nice.
Thanks so much Mary.
“Oh my yes, aren’t you EVER the innocent one!” Sounds like you have finally come to terms with my innocence? LMAO it was so much fun and I was half asleep sorry I didn’t do more!

WOowww…Joy, I need to have a min 30 mins shower…IIiiii Lovvveeee showering. Esp on Sundays, I m in there for an hour esp for a head wash..! LOL 😛
Great Post!
For the record may it be noted that Deepika has just admitted to only showering on Sundays… enough said
i was showering about 15 min everyday no matter what.
Now bcs of the hi water utilities in our area, i have switched to using the 5 min timer. At first, it was such a rush to get in and out, now I have it down to a science. You make up for it with the extra 10 min when you get out. I will stick with this plan. Sometimes i cheat cuz i have to shave my legs and just want to relax without thinking about a timer.
I beat all of you guys, under the water I take 1 hour, but I only shower twice a week max.
I’m notorious for long ass showers in my house lol..i take atleast 30-60 min sometimes more ><…sometimes i take a bath than showers right after 😛
Average overall is 15 minutes, I take 15~20minutes, the longer the hair u have the longer it takes, so that counts too
It takes me about 35 to 40 minutes. So you take short showers. I don’t care if I take long showers and get teased about it. I love to sing and dance but also shave and wash my hair.
