I love the Olympics! I don’t really know why, but I’ve been fascinated with them since I can remember watching them as a kid. I think it’s because they are so good at what they do and what they have accomplished is amazing. I will NEVER swim/run/jump/hit/row like those athletes do, but it makes you dream about “what if”. What if I had tried out for the volleyball team in college? What if I had taken up archery or equestrian? After those questions you have to ask yourself, “would I have put in all the time and effort that these athletes have?” I suppose if we were all really good at something and actually had a chance, we could say yes, we would have worked our butts off!
I think it’s fun to watch someone break a world record (Michael Phelps in the 400m IM!) and see their expression when they look up at the board and realize what they’ve done. It’s just exciting! The opening ceremonies are always beautiful (long, but beautiful) and to see so many people from around the world gather together for the “sport” of it makes peace seem possible for a few days at least! Yes, there are the athletes who will test positive for drugs and those that will be accused, but for those that win a medal because of their blood, sweat, and tears makes watching the Olympics worth it.
