Lonely jobs

I’m not sure if any of you have heard of Jason Davis.  I don’t know if he’s all over the country or not but he has a program here in Minnesota called On The Road Again.  The show the other night was great and I wanted to share it with you and ask you what you think about this.

All these people work pretty much alone.  Could you do it?  Take a look at this and you will see a sample of the show the other night.  It’s really kind of neat.

The question at hand though is would you want to work completely alone?  Do a job all by yourself?  I know for me, I would like the company.  There is boredom in so many jobs but at least if you work with someone else, you can at least talk to pass the time.

I’ve had a few really boring jobs but I liked most of the people I’ve worked with so that helped in my case but maybe some of you would rather work alone.  I know I once worked in a deli and I loved that job.  I got to cook and prepare lunches and I loved it but at the same time, it got boring at times and that was when we would talk to each other while doing something else.

In that clip, I could do the fire-spotter job, once I got up there that is but I would love the beauty of that view and the job is so important but the ship-keeper, I couldn’t do.  That is way to isolated.  There’s a big difference in being alone and being lonely.

So how is it with you guys?  Do you like your job and the people you work with or could you do a job like this and work completely alone?

I am graduating soon and honestly, I’d love to work alone. I guess I’d phrase it differently though. I would prefer to work independently. I think it’s so much more satisfying because you’re solely responsible for what you do or don’t do. Plus it gives you a lot more time for reflecting upon life, work, etc. And if it gets lonely, a friend is just a phone call away 🙂

I do both. I really like working alone because I can structure the task my own way and do it on my own timing. Maybe I like it because I tend to operate differently from most people. But, I get lonely if I’m alone too long, especially if I’m not riveted on a really interesting project. I guess my ideal would be to lock myself in my room and then go to a “common room” when I’m feeling sociable.

It depends entirely on the job at hand, right now I work alone but then I am self employed and planning escapes – can’t have people in on that. In the past when I am planning to take over the world kind of project then I like to have others involved, the energy you get from bouncing ideas etc is incredible. Don’t know, i think I could do the sitting on the hill bit – I am fine with my own company as strange as that may sound.

Ah I do love humans though.

I would not want to be alone. Not a big fan of being lonely. Some jobs I’d rather do myself b/c sometimes it’s just easier but I like to have company. Kids are my fav

As I was saying while my computer rudely sent my message, kids are my favorite kind company!! They are always so eager to help and say some pretty funny things!!!

lol Shivya has got be graduating with a degree in communications. ” I would prefer to work independently.”

I too wouldn’t mind the fire watcher job.

Although I work alone I do have intermittent contact with the people I’m working for.

    I like it that way.

That fire watcher job looks neat. I could do that. It sounds like it’s only in the spring and fall. Or when it’s very dry. I kind of felt sorry for that dentist. It sounds like he can’t give it up and only goes to the office so his wife and he don’t argue. A little sad.

I do work alone most of the time and I’m fine with it. There are times I do get lonely but at least I’m not alone all the time. I couldn’t do what that shipkeeper does.

    BTW….I love Jason Davis.
