At my age, you don’t remember numbers. I remember good times with my friends – spending time with people who just wanted to be with me. Just hanging around eating, enjoying music, walking in the city at night, spouting off about how to solve the world’s problems. Those have been the best birthdays for me.
I’m coming up on my first birthday with kids. I bet it will be a little different!
I loathe my birthday, as it falls on the eve of the biggest holiday of the year – I was a premie, and the docs tried to get my mother’s labor to stall in hopes I would be a Christmas baby. Ugh. I had 18 years of being forgotten in the rush to Santapolooza, and my 19th birthday, celebrated nearly alone and 3000 miles from home was my best one. I was in Monterey, on leave with the barracks to myself, the weather was decidedly un-winterlike, and I ate a whole pumpkin pie for dinner (it’s hard to find cake on Christmas Eve).
My worst was when I turned 24 (two years ago). My husband didn’t take leave, and was working odd hours. He completely forgot about my birthday until the last minute, took me to lunch (the only meal available) at a mediocre restaurant, and the only gift I recieved that day was a cake. Sophie, at 3, knew about birthdays, but didn’t know it was mine until that day. So while I spent the majority of that birthday alone, it wasn’t as awesome as my 19th birthday. It was downright miserable.
And birthdays with kids are fun! Sophie loves to remind me about how old I’ll get with each passing year. : )
When I turned 30
thegoddessanna, wow that was a real picker upper. lol
Try expecting to have a good time and make your own fun. 😉
I haven’t had my favorite birthday yet. I think it will be when I turn 100. 🙂
This year was my favorite because I got to go to ValleyFair with our best friends and Bailey and we had so much fun!!!! I don’t remember very many birthdays growing up. I do remember my Mom made cupcakes one year and we all got to decorate them any way we wanted. I had a sleep over, I think I was like 7-8 and I got a HUGE plush, purple dog from my best friend.
I can remember being 16, and having a hotel party. That was the best party.
When I turned 9 I had the best sleepover. We stayed up until 6am playing Black Jack and betting with straws from my dad’s bar. For some reason, some of the kids were never allowed to come back for another sleepover. 🙂
I don’t really have good or bad memories of my birthday as a child. It’s right after Christmas and we were always traveling. Either from Canada or Buffalo NY because we always went to one place or the other for Christmas. The best “gift” I think was a red princess phone on my 13th. My room was red and pink and man, I loved having my own phone. My 40th party was really fun. Everyone came out and we partied the night away and it was fun. My husband and kids do separate my birthday now from Christmas but as a child, they were combined so it wasn’t that fun.
I can’t wait for your birthday *grins*
I didn’t mean to be so down (and I loved my 19th birthday!). I enjoy celebrating other’s birthday’s more – my husbands, our parents’, especially the kids! Even the cats. Just, not my own. : )
18th. My future husband took me out to dinner and my mom and sisters drove up an hour completely by surprise to bring cake.
