Question of the day

When talking to someone while standing, are your arms usually at your sides, in your pickets, crossed in front of you or gesturing descriptively?

In front of me, but not crossed; my hands will be lightly clasped or holding something. I used to do the crossed arms thing, but I forced myself to stop that since it looks defensive and unfriendly.

  2. Elena says:

I am hyper aware of my hands and I will adjust them according to who I am talking to. With a creepy stranger that I can’t avoid cuz we’re standing in line at the post office or some such, definitely cross my arms. With someone I’m trying to impress like a potential client, I will clasp my hands in a classy fashion in front of me. Talking to a friend or one of my kids, I’ll wave and gesture with abandon.

  3. Eric & Tessa says:

We all know Eric’s answer, and when I’m shy I think I keep them at my sides mostly-but use my hands when I’m comfortable.

  4. Eric & Tessa says:

SKI, i stopped myself too when I read that it looks like that! It is so true too. It makes others more comfortable when you use your hands while talking, cuz you’re more comfortable.

  5. Joy says:

I usually cross my arms or have them in my pockets. I don’t think I look unfriendly though.

  6. Tessa says:

You’re very friendly Joy! I cannot recall you ever crossing your arms while talking to us though.

  7. nikki says:

I cross my arms or put them in my pockets. I don’t think it make you look unfriendly, unless that is you have a snotty look on your face. I feel weird just letting them hang there.

  8. joanharvest says:

None of the above. My arms are resting on my cane so I don’t fall on my A**.

  9. kweenmama says:

My arms are usually crossed unless I am talking about something I am passionate about, then I am gesturing like crazy.

  10. Sue says:

I do it all! I gesture, I stand relaxed, and I have them crossed. It’s a body language thing. When your arms are crossed you look closed off to people and maybe defensive, like you don’t want anybody in your personal space.
