First of all, when Lisa wrote her post about her hunting dilemma I was just going to write this as a comment. I figured we didn’t need two hunting posts. But, then I saw this on the news last night so I was forced to. This is MY town in this story. I count myself lucky compared to these people.
That bullet hit their house! The window!! Can you believe some of these guys?
We live on 80 acres. We have let people hunt in the past but last year we decided we weren’t going to do that anymore. We bought 4-wheelers and when it was time for us to play, it was time for those guys to be out hunting. We were pretty much shut inside the house. We have two yellow colored dogs. I didn’t really have a problem with them until they started to come without okaying it with us first. Half the time we didn’t even know they were out there. So the time came for us to think enough is enough. It is our land after all.
Toby noticed a car parked from his house and went and talked to some kid who told him his dad used to hunt here years ago and “Dean” said it was okay. Toby told him to stay on Dean’s land then. It’s a pie shaped piece of property and he was parked on our land. He ended up leaving. Sunday morning Toby called me to tell me there was another car parked there early in the morning so I went out on the 4-wheeler to find out who it was. It was that same kid but he had the dad with this time. Toby came tearing out of his driveway and we both told these guys that all of us neighbors call each other and we don’t want anyone hunting on our land. Especially with none of us knowing. They say one of us or the other said it was okay when none of us said it was.
We’ve had strangers come and ask if they can hunt. Can you imagine the guts that takes. To go to a strangers house and ask if you can shoot on their land?? We don’t know these people. Look at the story above, how do we know they can even shoot or about how safe they are. Our neighbors have horses and we all have dogs. Some have small kids. I had a guy come last week to deer hunt and I told him I had been feeding the deer and pheasants all summer and told him “technically” it was against the law since you can’t “bait” them. He told me it depended on how close he was to the feeders. HELLO!!! I feed them and then want to watch him kill them????? Besides, I didn’t know this man.
We have had more problems this year with hunters than any other year and I’d like to know why. I wouldn’t go to someone’s home that I didn’t know and ask to kill animals on their property. How can these people do this? I guess having them come to my door is one thing but having to chase them down on my 4-wheeler is something else.
The other morning when Toby called me to go see who was out there, I’d gotten a new hat and when I came inside that morning after telling them they couldn’t hunt here, I took my hat off only to find the tag hanging from the tassel on the hat!!!! They didn’t look like to much either but they must have thought I was either Minnie Pearl or Ma Kettle!!!
Good strategy to let them know there’s a “neighborhood watch” of sorts.
Yeah, you’re going to feed deer so you can watch them be shot. Wow, people can really be stupid.
Now the Minnie Pearl / Ma Kettle image – that ought to scare them away if nothing else does! Come to think of it, are you sure that’s not what’s scaring the deer away?
Very funny SKL!!! I’m cute in my own way!!!
You are way cutes tsk but I don’t know what Ma Kettle is .. is it scary like scarecrow???
Hate hunting with a passion, here you can only do it on game farms, you need a license and all animals shot are for culling purposes… though I guess in the rural areas this isnt always so.
Can’t stand it
I can hear the gunshots from my house during hunting season. Fortunately I live in a neighborhood with lots of houses and no land. The hunters are about a mile away.
My wasband has to be very careful bird watching at this time of the year.
I don’t know where people get their nerve sometimes. I did have to laugh about the tag on the hat though. All you needed was a shotgun in your hand or a big cane.
I felt like such an idiot when I saw that tag hanging from my hat!! Toby stopped by later and I had to laugh when I told him and he said “I wouldn’t worry about it, did you see what they looked like!” Still……
Sanity, Ma Kettle was an old icon of a farm wife. Check out this link

Love the Ma Kettle image. My husband is a deer hunter but he would never, ever go on someone elses property. Couldn’t you call the game warden out on this issue?
Yes Just A Mom, we could call the game warden (which takes forever) or the sheriff (would be much faster) but do you really want to piss off someone like this? Someone who would do this in the first place? I’m a little nervous to do that. After me in my “cute” hat and Toby tearing down the road, they won’t be back. It’s just having to do it all the time.
The nerve of people amazes me really!! I too love the Minnie Pearl image, that’s too funny!!
I will call the local police next time b/c I’m tired of this happening and when we say no the first time it means no!!!!!!!!
My dad and brothers hunt (fortunately I didn’t marry a hunter) but they never go on private property and they get irritated with irresponsible hunters.
I’d give anything to see you in that hat!!! LMAO!!
