I’ve been volunteering as long as I can remember. I recall in the first grade, the hippie years, the teacher was all about helping less fortunate kids and such. My church / school was big on supporting missions in poor countries. It was worked into my mindset that we look for opportunities to help others.
The thing I’ve done most over the years has been working with children – mostly tutoring. I started volunteering regularly in schools when I was 17 and tried to do this as much as I could until I became a mom.
About 15 years ago, I co-founded a charity to help destitute women and kids in developing countries, and about 10 years ago, I traveled to India to spend some time with schools/orphanages we were supporting / planning to support. That was a wonderful experience. Over the years since then, I’ve been a board member and then board officer on several nonprofit boards. I’ve also thrown some parties and done some other miscellaneous stuff for a local residential treatment center and foster care program. And I was active on my ex-employer’s volunteer committee – come to think of it, I won a national award several years ago for doing so much volunteering.
Since my kids came home, I don’t do as much, but I am still active on some boards. When the girls get a little older, I will look for opportunities to volunteer as a family, because I really enjoy it.
I used to when I had my own life and destiny wasn’t pulling my honky tonk strings – hopefully soon I can get back into it but here in England it seems to be totally different to back home.
Back home there is at least one orphanage in every town here you can’t find them anywhere here and if you ask someone they just go “huh”
Oh dear sorry went off on different tangent – to answer question, if its something I feel is worthy I have no probs volunteering 🙂
Does it count that none of the work I do all day pays anything? 😀
On a serious note, have done in the past, currently am surrounded by too many “needy” people in my own house to be able to escape.
The most exciting place I volunteered was in Watsonville, CA, working for an agency that gave free services, legal and otherwise, to farm workers.
I get myself into sooo many situations in helping others that I need a special calendar for it! So, the answer to your question is YES! I love it! I am happy to have the time to help!
I wish I could, soon I will. It’s hard because every afternoon is tied up. I have a 5 month old from noon to 4 everyday. I have 2-3 morning a week I would love to go to Baileys school but I haven’t had a working car in months. I never realized changing tires on a car could take so long! I really need to start though because I just need to get out of the house more!!
Yes, mainly at my son’s school. I am actually searching for a organization to be apart of. I think it is important to serve others.
I volunteer a little bit here and there.
I volunteer here and there too. It feels good to do for someone else.
Of course. I figure the reason I am able to do the things I do is for more than playing and having fun for myself. How selfish would that be?
I used to volunteer for everything when my boys were young. If they were in in, so was I. I did put my name in at the local school but they’ve only called me once. I thought with all the budget cuts, I’d have gotten called more. I showered and brushed my teeth so it wasn’t that.
Joy!!! That last line was funny! I thought they’d call you more often also and I’m sorry they haven’t b/c I know how much you were looking forward to that. I do volunteer now and then. It helps to have my daughter in extra curricular activities b/c they are always needing parents for something.
