Ham Cream Cheese and Pickle rolls

ham_pickle_rollupsThese are the biggest hit at all of our family get togethers. I thought everyone had heard of them but I found out that isn’t the case! So if you haven’t heard of them or haven’t tried them…..you’re in for a real treat! They make for an easy appetizer and always the first to go!

  • 1 pound ham (approx. 12 slices), lunch meat style – rectangular or square slices
  • 1 – 8 ounce package cream cheese, softened, or do what we do and use whipped cream cheese…much easier!
  • 1 jar midget dill pickles…whatever pickles you like! I like using Milwaukee midget pickles.

  1. Lay out the ham slices on a cutting board or mat.
  2. Stir the cream cheese until easily spreadable.
  3. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese on the ham. (This can be tricky if the ham is really wet. I let sit out while I am stirring the cream cheese and getting out the plastic wrap. You could pat dry if needed.)
  4. Cut the ends of the pickles and then lay side by side onto the cream cheese, about an 1/2-inch from the edge. (Use the long edge if your ham is rectangular.)
  5. Roll up the ham.
  6. Wrap by rolling in plastic wrap.
  7. Put into the refrigerator, at least a couple of hours or over night is best.
  8. Unwrap the roll and slice (you get slices that fall apart because of the ends of the pickles, but are good to eat!) into 1/2-inch slices and arrange on a plate or platter.
  9. Alterations:
  10. To avoid pickle ends, chop the pickles sprinkle over cream cheese or mix into the cream cheese.
  11. Add garlic, chives, parsley, etc to the cream cheese.
  12. Use thin slices salami or other rollable meat.

At first glance I thought these were rolled in Tortillas..I did that for our wedding.Same as what you did here ,some with ham and some with roast beef but in a Tortilla.Looks yummy! They are great appetizers.

  3. Joy says:

Hey Nik, what’s with the plastic wrap? I’ve never done that and am imagining how hard that must be. Just wondering why you do that and if I’m missing something.

    These are awesome.

  4. nikki says:

hmm I don’t know….I just found the recipe online instead of writing it up myself. I’d say…skip that part!

I leave them overnight but I have to hide them or they’d get “sampled” but I just slap the cream cheese on the ham, roll them up and slice them the next morning. It’s a lot easier than this recipe makes them seem.

I do blot the ham and squeeze as much of the pickle juice out of the pickles as I can get out. I also use pickle spears so they are as long as the ham so I don’t cut the pickle and lay them side by side either.

Our family just LOVES these. Jason and Eric especially.

  7. Sue says:

I have to say that I’ve never tried one b/c they just don’t look appetizing to me! But those boys sure do love ’em!

  8. Just a Mom says:

This sounds great. I will have to give them a try next time I have company over.

  9. Never heard of them! But, I like it!!! May have to try that this summer, for something different!!!!
