What do you concentrate on?

Try watching this 30 second video if you can. If you can’t, it’s about someone being interviewed for a job but all the interviewer can concentrate on is the stain on his shirt. Are you like this? I know I am. I can be very easily distracted by stuff like this. If I were this man, I’d be the same way.

What if you were taking to someone and a piece of their hair was sticking straight up or someone had a big ol booger in their nose or a glob of sleep in their eye, would you be able to just overlook that or would you focus on that one dumb thing?

I tend to like things even and balanced. If a picture is hanging funny, I tend to focus and concentrate on that. I also really notice things around me and often times find myself not paying attention to someone talking to me if there are a lot of other things going on around me. When it comes to “paying attention,” believe me, I’ve had a lot of teasing because I have a hard time sometimes staying focused with my mind. It’s really only when people are talking to me and I should be listening but there are certain things that take my mind totally off what I should be listening to.

I recover well though. It’s kind of funny but even though I’m not paying 100% attention, I retain everything that’s been said. I think that’s one reason I did my playground job so well. I was able to walk and talk with the kids who just wanted someone to listen to them but I was still able to keep my eyes on the football field or the kick ball game going on or the kids on the playground equipment.

Do things like this happen to you? What do you focus on and does it hamper you in any way?

  1. Oh I have the same habit too! When I was watching the video, I couldn’t take my eyes off the stain, not even for a second!

I am very much affected by things that are “out of place” in my environment. To the extent possible, I put things right before I can relax or concentrate. For example, I am forever closing cupboard doors and drawers and putting away miscellaneous stuff people leave all over the kitchen, so that I can peacefully enjoy my meal. However, when I can’t do anything about it, I have learned to kind of block things out. It was either that or go be a hermit in a cabin on the mountainside. I’m that weird.

Very funny video! I would say I like pictures straight, if I’m in an office and it’s way off I have the urge to straighten and sometimes I might just go with the urge. Having 2 cats and a dog I know I walk around with pet hair on my clothes some times I bet that bugs some people. I seem to over look boogers and things. But more details like lighting, music, job performance over all picture of things that can bug me. I think its all the years of being in the restaurant business I was always keeping an eye on the over all picture.

  4. I’m typically pretty good about listenting, but my eyes tend to wander around and pick up small details about my surroundings. I know, strange. I also often pause when talking because I’m constantly trying to find the proper word, and I’d bet I very often lose my audience when I do so.

Well Joy, I waited to answer this because I wanted to see what others said. This is a subject of interest to me. I trained people on interviewing techniques and I have interviewed thousands of people. I would have done the interview looking directly at the person, but after the interview I would have told them about the stain and how they need to be careful of such things. I am “trained” to be focused, when I am conducting interviews…in my personal life, I would just tell the person they have something going on~~~~:)

I’m sorry more people didn’t see this. I had trouble posting it last night. I kept losing it. Thank goodness I’ve started to copy them because this seems to happen a lot at night when I post. When I finally got it in, the comments were turned off and I didn’t know. Thanks to SKL this morning, she alerted me to it but I think a lot of people missed it.

  6. Well. I have a tendency to be distracted very easily. If something is out of place just a little, it is all that I can stare at.
