Waiting for a Surprise!!!

Lucy's surpriseDo you like surprises? I love them…when I don’t know about them. A real surprise is totally unexpected and fun! My husband LOVES to surprise me, but he also likes to let me know he’s surprising me! That, my friends I cannot handle! It’s the anticipation of it, it drives me nuts! He usually caves in because I don’t let up. I’d rather him not say anything than to tease me about it. I know that’s why he does it though. I  do love the look on his face and feeling he has when he plans something fun for us. He genuinely loves to see me happy.

So Jason bought me a camper, well he bought it for all of us but this is how he told me….”wait till you see what I got you for your birthday!!!” UGH those words killed me slowly! At this point my birthday was still a month away. I’m thinking, are you kidding me!? We have to do this for a month? No I got it early and he even caved in before I saw the camper. Shouldn’t he know by now I will not leave it alone.

Well he has done it again! He says to me the other day….wait till you find out what we’re doing Sept 11th????  My first reaction is, well it’s Sue’s birthday and the obvious 911. I have been racking my brain trying to figure this out! I don’t think he’ll cave into this one. He spoiled the camper surprise b/c I wouldn’t let up. I even went as far as googling events for that day in or around our area. Came up with nothing besides 911 events.

Do you like surprises even when you know there is a surprise coming? Would you rather be totally blindsided with a surprise? It drives me nuts and that’s probably why he does it. I try to act like I don’t care, we both know that I do! He’ll even do it on a normal day going out to eat or something. I won’t know where we’re going until we get there or close. I do love that he puts thought into things for me, he is a romantic for sure!!! It still drives me nuts though! How bout you, do any of you hate the unknown or do you welcome any surprises. I’m certainly not complaining, I have a very thoughtful husband and I will continue racking my brain trying to figure his little surprises out till the day I die I’m sure.

I’m not with you on this one Nikki. I HATE surprises. I really like to know where I’m going and when and if someone even comes over for coffee or something and I don’t know about it, it just throws me off for some reason. I had a “surprise” wedding shower that my relatives in Canada planned for us and I hated every single minute of it. For one thing, everyone was all dressed up and I looked awful and I also don’t like the attention all on me. It makes me very uncomfortable.

So, please don’t plan any surprises on me. I’d rather know and anticipate the party. Does that make sense?

I like surprises. I also like trying to figure out surprises. My husband always has the most thoughtful gifts though. The problem we have is that he spends all the money on me, while I am desperately trying not to go over budget. It happens every holiday and celebration. It’s frustrating, because if I spend money on him, I feel guilty because we didn’t really have the extra money to spend, you know? That’s my only problem with surprises.

  3. Lucy says:

    I like surprises…both if I know about them or if I don’t.

Joy, I agree that sometimes surprises aren’t the best thing ever (being underdressed at your own shower sucks!), but in the end its the thought that counts.

  4. JavaQueen says:

I would love a surprise if that’s exactly what it was- but if I catch wind of something, I want it right then and there. I’d go out of my mind and I’d drive my hubs out of his by bugging him about the details…

  5. SKL says:

I haven’t had much experience with surprises. But I think I would be like you. It would be fun to get a nice surprise, but the minute I sensed a “surprise” coming, I wouldn’t be able to stop trying to figure it out. Rather than ask, I would spend my whole time working it out in my head, getting myself all nervous because I don’t want to guess something better than it really is and then disappoint myself and everyone else. In short, giving me something to think about can be dangerous! Best to just spill the beans and be done with it.

But I’m with Joy in not wanting to be “publicly” surprised. My mom still talks about the surprise shower they threw her for her first baby, oh, 46 years ago. She couldn’t afford maternity clothes so she had only a couple of things she could wear, of which the only “clean” one had a big hole in the butt. She also hadn’t had a chance to wash her long black hair. Needless to say, she was not interested in being around people! She lived through it, but the lesson is, never force a woman out of her home (or gather people in her home) without giving her plenty of warning!

  6. I think it’s lovely that he likes to surprise you :D. I’ve never had surprises like that… My boyfriend, bless him, isn’t very romantic in this way and the only surprises I’ve gotten from him have been my birthday presents which are always a mystery to me. I love surprises though! I’ve always wanted a surprise party, for instance, but I’ve never gotten one *pout*.

I’m not sure if he does it more out of pure love for me and seeing me happy as he does of seeing me go insane trying to figure it out!!! LOL….A full fledge surprise birthday party would be fun!!!! I’ll pout with you ;(

  7. Sue says:

I like surprises also, but not that teasing about the surprise! That ruins it I think! I have never been truly surprised. Toby loves to tease me about things too and it drives me up the wall! Your surprise better be coming out to party with us on that day or I’ll be disappointed!!!!

  10. Just a Mom says:

I don’t really care for surprises myself. I was the kid who unwrapped and then wrapped all of my Christmas presents that were hidden in my parent’s closet!

  11. Love surprises. My birthday is coming up a few more days and I am dying to see my presents! I can totally relate to the feeling of anticipation all bottled-up inside you 😀

  12. Karen Joy says:

HAHA,I was just like you..Just a Mom.I used to wrap and unwrap all my c-mas presents in my parents closet too. Then come c-mas i was disappointed i had done that,no surprise left.
I still cant stand when I know there is a gift for me,I will bug and bug(whoever it is)to tell me,I HAVE TO KNOW NOW!!!Just as a child i am sorry if ido find out cause I ruined it for “the” actual day.Quess in presents I like to be surprised,if I could only learn to leave it alone and not bug them to death for hints!
I DO NOT like to be surprised other ways though.I have to know were we are going etc.I am a planner that way.Not content not knowing EVERYTHING!:)

  13. nikki says:

Yes I would love to be fully surprised but once you know about it it’s not a surprise anymore, it becomes a game. A game I have to figure out or it’ll drive me nuts. No I do not like people surprising me at my door. My sisters did that to me one. I knew they were coming for a visit but they told me that my brother in law couldn’t come. I was disappointed, b/c I missed him. But when they showed there he was. I was happy to see him but not prepared to sleep 2 more people, he brought a friend. Surprises like that I don’t like.
Ma….so I hear you know about this surprise on Sept. 11th……

  14. Jen says:

Ok I know this was over a year ago…. but what was the surprise?

Its kind of killing me and I’m already dying of suspense, I found this page because I was searching about surprises….
my bf says he has a surprise for me over a month away…. he only told me yesterday and its already driving me nuts!!!!!!

    • Joy says:

He took her to a fantasy suite at a hotel.

    • Nikki says:

Well it wasn’t a huge thing like I thought but it was, still a very nice surprise! He took me to my favorite restaurant. It’s an expensive place to go, and we very rarely get to go. It’s a real treat! 🙂 Mmmm now I wanna go back! We probably haven’t been back since, actually no, we haven’t!

That’s exactly why he told me he had a surprise. He does that often, even for the smallest of surprises…it drives me nuts!!! LOL You’ll have to come back and let me know what yours was! Maybe a trip somewhere??? 🙂

  15. Jen says:

So I got my surprise only there was more then one – he took me to paris, we had dinner in the eiffel tower, he proposed with a beautiful ring by the seine and when we got home he had bought me an electric blanket (which even though it was the decoy present to psyche me out, was one of the best bits cause I get so cold and had been talking about getting one for ages). I’m glad I didn’t try to get it out of him, cause even though it drove me nuts it was worth it in the end and he was so proud of himself 🙂

    • Joy says:

Wow Jen. What a great trip and a great guy. I’m so glad it turned out like that for you.

    • Laura says:

Holy Cow!!! That’s so cool! Congratulations!!

    • Nikki says:

No freaking WAY?! WOW~~ good for you! That’s an incredible surprise!!! Congrats!

And I get what you’re talking about when it comes to the electric blanket, I would never live without one after having mine. Nothing like getting into a nice warm bed!

    • Joy says:

I’m waving my hand here too. I LOVE my electric blanket so much. I can’t sleep with it on but about 9 I go turn it on and my beds so nice and warm when I crawl in.

      • Nikki says:

I turn mine on high about an hour before I go to bed and I turn it down to about 5-6…all night long. I like to be VERY warm! lol And I also use mine all year round, I know, I’m crazy.

        • Laura says:

I can’t use an elec blanket. I just like to pile on the quilts. The heavier (weight-wise) the better. My mom jokes that she could pile bricks on me and I’d be warm, but a lightweight space blanket? And I’d freeze.
