    Balancing a checkbook! What’s that?

  2. Sue says:

Yeah, I don’t do it either, that’s what I thought I’d ask! Online banking is great b/c you see immediately what you have and what’s not posted, ect. Love that option!

  3. SKL says:

I have always balanced my checkbook and always will. But I do go online at least once a week to make sure the bank agrees with my computations.

Maybe I am a little anal?

  4. joz1234 says:

bank does it for me too…

  5. DM says:

oh, a little of both. normally, I’ll go about 4 or 5 months, and reconcile the two (what bank says vs what I think) If there’s not a major difference I will scroll back a few months just to make sure there are no major outstanding checks and just update my checkbook w/ the banks #’s

call me lazy but I do not have time to chase down every penny

  6. SKL says:

One reason I do reconcile often is that I don’t like to leave too much cash in an account that earns about 0.00001% interest. I have an ING account that now earns about 1.4% (used to be more like 4.5%, before Obama). So I keep a “safe” amount in my checking and move the difference to & from my ING account. I need to be fairly accurate to make sure I cover automatic payments and such. When I was broke and had student loans, house payments, etc., I used any “extra” cash to pay down loans as fast as I could, which again required accuracy. I figure I saved a lot of money as well as stress by reconciling. Or maybe I’m just anal.

For several years, I used MS Money to do it, and I balanced the accounts (checking and savings, anyway. steve was in charge of the investments). When The Wreck happened, somehow I let it slide, and now I haven’t done a bloomin’ thing with the accounts since May of last year. I just keep looking at this ever-growing pile of monthly statements, thinking, “geez, I need to get that done, but the pile’s soooo biiiig, and Josh’s legos are RIGHT THERE…”

    Legos win, every time.

  8. Lucy says:

I don’t balance my check book.. just look online.

  9. Just a Mom says:

I balance the check book! It is my money so I want to know where every little penny is myself. It’s like getting change at the you count it for yourself or do you trust what the clerk gives you? Me I always count it!

Don’t feel bad SKL, I guess I’m a little anal too!

  13. nikki says:

Neither….Jason gives me a certain amount of money to work with and I distribute it out accordingly. He knows how much money we have, I don’t. I just pay the bills!
