Lab, retriever or a cross between the two..both have a nice temperment and are great family dogs, plus great hunting dogs if thats what u like.
no i dont like…….. them 2 dogs of ours are like dumb and dumber….barkin at nothing all the time
Oh shush sean
Labs are retrievers. 😉
Yes but there are Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. Vicki is talking “Goldens.”
And there are curly coated retrievers, and flat coated retrievers, and Chesapeake Bay retrievers and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retrievers… All retrievers are great though, aren’t they? I will not argue about that. Not so fond of grooming them though because my back hurts when I’m done! They like to sit and they are usually heavy to hold them up for the whole groom! 🙂
We had a flat coated retriever and she was wonderful and so beautiful. We adored her. Do you know if they are always black?
Joy, they can be black or liver colored.
I don’t know . . . my sister breeds German Shepherds, so I have a bias toward them (I always did, since they are smart). My dad’s old dog is an English Setter and while he’s the dumbest dog in the whole wild world, he is also very sweet and loyal. I’m not that big on labs because of the low brain-cell-to-pound ratio. Hmm. Huskies are pretty, but I hear they are mean. So . . . I think I am defaulting back to German Shepherds.
I’m a big fan of the English springer spaniel for the following reasons:
– they have very, very soft fur, which is excellent to rub and nuzzle against
– they are extremely loyal
– they want to please
– they are cuddly, always wanting to touch you
– they are sweet to strangers
– they are smart (at least, mine is. she can be trusted off the leash, and we didn’t even train her)
– they are small enough to play with without them hurting you, but big enough that you don’t have to worry about hurting them
– they’re just pretty
We’ve had a springer spaniel for years, and she is bar none the best dog we’ve ever had.
newfoundland …and no I don’t have one because it would be as big as my front room ….if I had a house I would so have one!
I’m not sure on this. My neighbors have labs and they run around the neighborhood and bark all the time, one use to have a huskie and they seem to be very nice dogs but extremely hyperactive. I would have to say german sheperd or saint bernard because both are extremely smart and loyal. Also if someone breaks into your house with those dogs they’ll wish that they didn’t LOL.
If you know me you know I’m in love with standard poodles. They are just so smart and gentle and sweet and funny. And soft and pretty too! 🙂
well, I own a Golden Retriever, and he’s my second, so I’m partial to them. They’re smart and energetic, and big enough to handle being a football tackle dummy for an exuberant six-year-old. I can see that they’re not for everyone, though… their energy can be destructive, if not directed properly. The downside? Dear God, the HAIR!!! It’s everywhere.
I also have a soft spot for Siberian Huskies. My best friend breeds them, and hers are exceptional. Also very, very high energy, and wicked smart. They need their energy directed, too, or they can become aggressive and not nice companions. Her kennel not only has several obedience and agility titles in it, most of her dogs are also sled dogs – she competes in short-distance races.
If I was to get another dog, I’m thinking it would probably be a Bernese Mountain Dog. Bigger than a retriever, it’s got a pretty quiet temperament, and is good with kids. But, again… the hair. Maybe I should just buy shares in Dyson and be done with it.
I do have to go with Labs. We’ve had them for years and I do like the temperament. But I’m with Laura, DEAR LORD, the hair!!!!!! The only bad thing about Labs that I’ve found is they act like they are 6 months old until they are about 10 years old and suddenly, they are old. They are great dogs with kids though.
Given that said, if one dog does something you don’t like, I’m not sure it’s just the breeding. It could be the way they were trained. OR, not trained. If you let your dog run around the neighborhood, I’m not sure it’s the breed but it’s the training. Chances are high if you’ve got a dumb neighbor, their dog won’t be the brightest either.
My favorite dog has always been German Shepherd’s. They are VERY smart and VERY loyal. 😀
I don’t have a favorite breed. Growing up we had mutts and they were just as great as the purebread Keishound (I think that’s the spelling?!) my mom got later.
I like german shepards or labs myself. We always had mutts…one was part dobermen/beagle/german shepard and he was the best dog we ever had!
We love our Corgi! He’s a great family dog and very smart.
Rottweilers. And one day I WILL have one. It’s what I grew up with. My mom bread them when I was little. They are very loyal and given the right owner are extremely kind and gentle. They are given a bad wrap as the pittbulls are..which I also like. It’s all about the owner!
Since I’ve been with Jason we’ve only had Labs and they are great…good family dogs. They are adorable from puppy to adult. I think Rotts are much cuter however…look like lil bear cubs when they’re little. Grow up to be beautiful dogs in my opinion.
Big breed has to go to the Rottweiler. Small breed goes to the Maltese. I know that wasn’t the question but ya got it anyway! :}
I love ALL dogs but my favorite breed is…. DACHSHUND. We have two that we adore for thousands of reasons- too many reasons to even list!
I love Great Danes because of their enormous size. they’re like miniature horses!
