I was saying on Ellen’s blog that my dad was a volunteer fireman and he used to get called in the middle of the night and when I’d hear his fire alarm go off, I’d get up and sit in the bathroom on the floor in front of the heat register and read until he got home. I worried about him. Then we’d have toast or something together when he got home. He once asked me why I got up and waited for him and I told him “I didn’t want him to eat himself lonely.” I couldn’t have been more than 5 or 6. I remember it as clear as day.

I remember when I was 2 years old and busted my head open. (Yep, that’s what happened to the other half of my brains.) My brothers (who were 5 and 4) were climbing onto a dresser and jumping onto my bed from there. I decided to try it too. Then up on top of the 6′ dresser, I got nervous, so my brother “helped me jump.” I remember up to the “I’ll help you jump, __-ie” and the rest is based on my mom’s recollection and the scar on my forehead.

I also have some vaguer early memories, probably around that age or younger. But the broken-head one is the earliest clear memory.

I also have a very clear memory of skinning my knee on my 4th birthday, including the conversations that proceeded and followed the incident.

I always told myself that I had until my kids’ second birthdays to make all of my major parenting mistakes, because they wouldn’t remember any before that. Unfortunately, I didn’t meet that goal . . . .

Well this is just bizarre. But the first thing that popped into my head when I read this was…

I must have been about two years old and I was without my diaper (cloth of course) and I was running around the vacant lot next to our home. What the heck is that all about?

  5. Just a Mom says:

I remember sitting in my high chair in the kitchen of the restaurant that my parents owned. I must have been about 2 or so at the time. My dad told me to be careful with the cup of milk I had and I just laughed at him and poured it all over the tray! I remember he was a bit ticked off but the cook we had was laughing right along with me!
