Hole-y Towel Batman!

I have been debating this for a long time, but I never seem to get anywhere with it.  Usually I forget about it until nighttime when I need them the most, and then I kick myself for not getting any.  After a long hard day at work, all I want to do is take a nice hot shower before bed, and when I get out I want a nice cozy towel waiting for me.   Is that too much to ask?  I don’t think so, but apparently I can’t remember to buy us new towels!

Our bath towels have seen better days let me tell you!  When Toby and I first got married, the only towels we had were the ones I had in college and the ones he kyped  from his mom when he moved out.  That doesn’t add up to too many towels.  So, the first towels  I bought were from WalMart and I still have those towels.  They’ve done the job, but they are small and don’t really hold a lot of water so I use those for the kids.  They are also kinda scratchy so I really don’t like them!  My college towels are in pretty good shape yet.  They are from JCPenney and I’m pretty sure they were one of my graduation gifts!  They’re nothing fancy.  They’re bigger than the WalMart towels and a lot thicker which correlates to more absorbency, but they’re almost too thick.  They don’t wrap around my head right and they’re very fluffy when folded.   Apparently, Toby went through a stage where the only towels he’d use were white ones so when he left home, those were the ones he took with him.  The kicker is he STILL will only use those towels!  I will admit that I have gotten use to them also, but they are getting ridiculous!  You can pretty much see through these towels.  They are starting to fray, rip, and tear in all sorts of places.  The loose strings get caught in the washing machine which results in me ripping them more as I’m trying to get the out of there.

So, last night, I finally broke down and bought 2 towels.  Yup, only 2!  I have found that I’m very picky about my towels and with the price for one towel these days, I’m not going to buy 10 new ones only to find out I hate them!  The newest towels came from Penney’s again, but I got 2 different kinds.  One was the JCP brand and the other is Linden Street.  They both felt nice, but the Linden Street one is just a bit nicer.  It felt amazing and of course was more expensive.  They were on sale, but even the sale price made me want to cringe because the thought of spending $100 on towels should make anyone cringe!  They are in the dryer as I type so I’m excited to give them a dry.  (Ha ha ha, get it?!)

Do you have certain brands that you prefer?  Is there one kind I should try versus another?  I know that I hate WalMart towels and believe me I’ve been looking for good towels for a long time!  I’ve looked at the ones at Target and I don’t think they feel any nicer than the ones at WalMart so I haven’t actually purchased any from there.  I know I need to do something soon though because hole-y towel Batman, they’re getting pretty bad!

I am not familiar with brands but we have towels from Bed Bah and Beyond and from Ana’s Linen. Both are very nice towels.
I liked your story, wrapped around your question 🙂

I actually just bought new towels while on holidays in AZ.They are cheaper than up here.I bought 4 from Walmart,Canopy is the name on them and they were on sale for $10.00 each, they were nicer feeling than their other ones-they felt SO thin. They dry us fine but do they ever lose lint/fluff..whatever you call it.I HAVE to wash and dry them in their own load or my other laundry is full of brown or their green lint.Ive probably washed them 4 or 5 times and they still do this. Its AWEFUL!And even from drying off while standing in the tub I have lint all over the tub..weird.I bought some Ralph Lauren towels too and I really like them.None of this fuzz everywhere and they feel great!I cant remember what I paid for them though.I prefer them.

You know Karen? I had one single dumb towel just like you mentioned and that shedding seemed to go on forever. It was a light rose colored one and it got all over the other clothes and worse, on us after a shower. The first time it happened to me I was “lotioning” up after my shower and I felt all these little bump things gathering on my skin. It was so gross. I just kept washing it and it finally stopped. But that was gross and messy when it got on other things.

I have had that happen too and it sucks! You think, WTH is that on me?!

        • Karen Joy says:

It is gross and I find my bathroom needs cleaning/dusting more too.It floats around and lands everywhere.Ticks me off.Im wondering how thin they will end up if they keep shedding, lol. My lint thing is just full after after being in the dryer.Anyhow,I suppose I could have worse problems uh?

I used the towels I “stole” from my mom (already used) for about 20 years. Funny thing is, they are still in good shape. They are probably from JCPenney or a similar dept. store. The only reason I switched is that I was tired of taking crap regarding the color (blue) which apparently isn’t stylish in my bathroom (white, pink & blue). Whatever! Anyhoo, a year or two ago, I bought some organic towels from Walmart, and they are still going strong. I like them. I may have unusual taste in towels. I don’t want them to be too soft or too thick. And I only use one set. I use it, hang it back up, and use it again the next day. On wash day, I snatch them and hang them back up right out of the dryer. You know me, “less is more.”

I have one towel that I bought from Wal-mart a bunch of years ago, and I love it. I bought it on impulse because I needed a towel for the gym, and this one was $3 and really really soft. I haven’t used it a lot since then – I bought it right before the wreck, and haven’t been back to the gym – but it’s still soft and as fluffy as it was when I bought it. And I have several kid’s towels from Wal-mart that have stood up to Josh’s little-kid abuse. I think both are their “Home Trends” brand. The kids ones are for sure. not as sure about the purple one I bought for the gym.

I also have a couple from Bed, Bath & Beyond that I really like. They’re on the thick side, and pretty absorbent. Of course, I’m like you, haven’t bought new towels in close to twenty years, so these new ones that I’ve bought recently seem INCREDIBLE when compared to the old ones.

The picture of your old towel totally made me laugh because my mom has similar looking one’s in her closet. I got most of my towels right before I went off to collage…. and I think they were from BBB. They are OK, but a little too thick and not absorbent. I wish they were softer….

Maybe someday I’ll re-invest in new towels…they are just so expensive. Keep us updated on how you like your new towels.

This cracked me right up. What a great post Sue. I also love that picture of the towel. What are the odds those holes would be so equal? One in each corner of the towel?? LOL!!

I would never in a million years buy white towels out of choice. I don’t even think you can buy white ones anymore. Anyone know if you can?? BUT…when Toby was a baby his skin broke out over every little thing so I had to take him to a skin specialist who suggested the white towels as there was less dye in them. I’m not sure now how much sense that makes since wouldn’t there be “white dye” in white towels?? But….I did what he suggested but I don’t think he meant he had to use them his whole life?? LOL!!

I’m pretty fussy about my towels too. I also don’t like them really super thick. I think they are too hard to hang on to like that. I hate when I’m trying to dry myself off and the towels slips out of my hands.

When we got the pool I bought probably 10 towels in a variety of pastel colors from JC Penny. I love them. Part of them are from the JC Penny “Home Collection.” The other part are “Gloria Vanderbilt Home.” I was buying a variety of colors and wasn’t concerned with a certain brand. I do think they were on sale and that’s why I bought so many but I knew with the pool we were going to need more towels but Paul and I are like SKL and pretty much use the same ones. When I’m doing laundry, I’ll grab them from our spots and throw them in the wash and hang them back when they’re clean.

    Happy toweling.

BBB is one place I haven’t been in forever and never thought to look there! This past weekend I did go back to Penney’s and buy a few more towels. (I wrote this last Thursday) Toby decided he liked the Linden Street brand and I did too. It’s suppose to dry 33% quicker than the average towel and it seems to do it’s job. The towels were still on sale, but on Saturday morning they were discounted farther so I got really excited! Yippy for deals! I was able to get 6 towels and 4 wash clothes for $30 after the sale price, $10 coupon and some “sales tax sale” they had. Thank you JCPenney!

We got ours from Kohl’s. They are big enough and thick enough. They are getting rather old though! Towels are DANG expensive though, it’s ridiculous!

This post made me laugh too! I still can’t believe that he only likes white towels! We have ONE white towel, and I do have to say I like using it! LOL I don’t know why, it just seems so much cleaner to me. I don’t know if I’d buy all white towels though. I do like different colors. We have burgundy, olive green and a lighter green color.

I will have to look into the Linden Street brand, especially if they are on sale! I always forget to look, even though we go there once a month!

Unfortunately I’m not much help here. My towels are getting stringy too, time to buy new towels for my house . I’m not sure what the best brand would be. Sounds good tho a nice warm fluffy towel hot out of the dryer. I did buy 2 new pillows the other day with goose down. Not sure I like them yet. I got up in the middle of the night and rescued my old squished pillow and was much happier and could sleep with out my neck hurting.

    • Sue says:

Oh man, pillows could have their own post!!! I had the same pillow for years and then one day it was gone and I have yet to love a pillow the same way as that one!

we lost all oru towels and stuff when the hurricane hit so we are still in the process of building our collection back up. I got some towels before christmas at Khols and then some at target. I tend to prefer the ones from target over the ones from khols.. They absorb the water better..

I’ve been pretty happy with the towels I got from Costco. I couldn’t even begin to tell you the brand though (too lazy to get up from the computer to see).
