NO!!! I’ve tried and tried them and have now stocked up on the ones I like. Until I like them, I will have enough to last my lifetime upstairs. I’ve been buying them for two years and have one more to do so.
Most of the lights in our house have been switched over to the CFL style light bulbs. I think that they save alot of money, but I am constantly going around and turning lights off that aren’t needed.
I don’t like to sit in a dark house!!
And I don’t like looking at high electric bills!!!!
I don’t think they save as much money as they’re advertised to do… I can’t tell you how many of them I’ve had fail. And at $5-7 a pop (sometimes more), they’re NOT economical at all.
Frankly, I HATE them. They make my eyes burn, ’cause it’s a weird light spectrum. I have a ‘fade’ light in my diningroom that the CFL doesn’t work in (they don’t “fade”), they take for-EVER to warm up, so putting them in the garage or outside is worthless. Also, I won’t put them outside because we get such wicked wind, I’ve had more than one break… and I do NOT want one of those to break. They’re a nightmare, and Joy… I’m hoping that Michelle Bachmann’s proposal to repeal that stupid law outlawing the good ol’fashioned regular light bulbs goes through.
So, no. We haven’t switched. And I’m hoping that we never have to.
My main peeve with them is the long time to lighten. When I want a light on I want it to come on right now and not in a minute. I also hate the glaring bright color they have. They really bother my eyes too.
Yeah, I was gonna say that too – can we hope they will repeal that law?
Let’s hope Michelle Bachmann wins. I can’t stand the other one running.

I thought the old ones were supposed to be phased out by 2010, so I stocked up on a bunch of them. But there must be a conspiracy afoot, because those bulbs burned out way faster than ever before. I mean, I could have a light bulb in a certain spot for 10 years before it died, and then the new one died within months. Gimme a break. So we have already gone through the “stock” but I have found more in the stores, so maybe they aren’t being outlawed after all?
I have bought a couple of the “new” kind. One was for my kids’ room, because I wanted one that would not get hot enough to burn anything. So if my kids put paper or something near the lighbulb, they wouldn’t burn the house down. I bought a pack of 2, and the first one didn’t ever work, but the second one did. It takes forever to light up, though, so I end up using the other light which flicks on brightly right away. Then I bought one bulb to shine continuously in the basement room where critters were moving in (I read that this would discourage them – but they didn’t leave).
Maybe these bulbs do use less electricity over time, though I’m not sure, given that you have to wait a couple minutes before you can see anything. Most of the time I would finish my task and leave in less time than that, so I’m thinking I’m not saving electricity while it warms up. And the light bulbs cost so much more, it would take a lot of energy savings to justify that. (They say they last longer, but in my experience, their average life isn’t much longer.)
I still don’t like the way the new bulbs look (and most of my light fixtures do not conceal the bulbs). I hope they improve the way they look and function before they become “mandatory,” but since the market has been tampered with (you’ll have to buy them whether you like them or not), that probably won’t happen. So I will keep using the old kind as long as I can.
As far as I know, the ban on the old – good – bulbs goes into effect in 2012.
To my knowledge, it’s 2012. Every time I go to Walmart or Target, I get 12 boxes or so. I like the Reveal bulbs. I buy the 60 and 40 watt. We don’t go through very many light bulbs anymore. When Jason lived upstairs and when we lived in Minnetonka and had an upper level in our house, we went through a lot of them. I think when there isn’t a lot of banging or slamming of things or even music on right above the room pulsating it makes the bulbs last longer. I also have three ceiling fan lights and I usually only have one bulb on at night because I can’t stand the brightness of four or five bulbs glaring at me at night. If I turn the light on during the day I twist the bulbs all on. When I need a light, I need light but at night I like a softer light.
I agree they look awful, but they do safe a lot of energy for sure. And I am afraid it will be a law here as well. It has been a law in Holland for more than 5 years. I have no problem that it takes longer the lamps get lightened.
Some, yes. I heard a news report a few weeks that they can make you sick. Not to mention the disposal issues because of the mercury in them.

We have tried them on our front porch lights and they seem to blow out a heck of a lot faster then the old ones. We have gone back to the old ones. Maybe I should start stocking up on them as well!
Nope. I haven’t had to buy any to be honest. Maybe I should go buy some of the old ones to have them in stock.
NOOOOOO!I HATE those bulbs!Ive been trying to stock up on the good old bulbs too but some stores up here dont sell them anymore.The reasons I dont like them has been mentioned before,the time they take to light up and you cant use them outside in the winter,they remain so dim.And I also have alot on 3 way lamps and dimmers and theyre not good for that.It ticks me off “they”are deciding for me which bulbs to use!
Our apartment complex changes ALL the light bulbs in all the apartments. I hate them… they take too long to brighten up… and the light hurts my eyes. As they are blowing out we are replacing them with regular light bulbs. Would love to save money on energy… but they are expensive and I don’t like them!
I hate those bulbs as well! I’ve tried them in the outside lights, but they take way too long to warm up and when it’s -20 they don’t work at all. Well now what’s the point of that?! We have a large number of the old bulbs as well. I also don’t like the color they give off and hope like hell they truly don’t ban the other ones!
