I like charities that make a big difference in a kid’s opportunities. Whether it’s literacy in the USA or an orphanage in a developing country, it doesn’t matter, as long as I believe it to be well-run and helping kids for the long run.
I am a co-founder of a charity that gets the biggest chunk of my cash donations. It supports charities in less-developed countries with an emphasis on kids (orphanages, schools), handicapped (esp. kids/schools), destitute women, and the elderly. I used to be very involved with a local literacy organization, but control shifted to some folks who I felt were misdirecting it, so I completely dropped out and stopped donating to them a couple years ago. I have also been involved in an organization that provides services for kids and families with mental health issues. Mostly I designate my cash donations for the on-campus school that their residential treatment kids attend. Those are the three that have received significant amounts of donations and time from me over the years.
Honestly, no, I don’t. I started giving to the ACS and all they do is call call call for more money money money and they just pissed me off so I quit.
I don’t have a fav. charity, I guess the only thing we donate stuff to is the Epilepsy Foundation.
We do give Epilepsy also and the ALS foundation and Unicef.
I guess you could say my “cause” would be the Meeker County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, I donate hundreds of hours towards search and rescue and many other things involved in it. I also have given in the past to the Make a Wish Foundation and the Epilepsy Foundation.
No, I don’t have a favorite. We generally only donate to the Children’s hospital, but didn’t this year. I gave to the Salvation Army this year.
I thought of this question the other day, because I was looking at a site for Panthera, a group that’s working on preserving habitat for Big Cats that are endangered, particularly Tigers. They look like a worthwhile charity, and I was thinking of donating…. which got me to thinking about other charities… and what you guys all do.
Other charities for us? Really, there’s only one consistent one, and that’s the school for mentally handicapped men that a relative lives in. We’re involved in their fall festival & fundraiser, and we try and help with other things through the year when we’re in town.
