How’d That Work For You?

Hey everyone!  As I’m writing this, we are in the first cold weeks of the new year.  My how time flies!  The holidays are behind us and maybe our new years resolutions too 😉  Before you know it, spring will be here and us northerners will finally be thawing out.  I can’t wait!

But, what I really wanted to know is how are all your Christmas gifts working for you? When you first get something it’s exciting and you might use it all the time, but as time wears on, you may forget about it or just decide it wasn’t as great as you thought.  Kids come to mind especially.  They love to play the death out of something right away and then never touch it again!  So you’re left to wonder, why did I buy that in the first place?

Has the excitement and newness worn off on your presents yet?  Do you tend to use things all year long or forget about them after a couple of months?

We’ve barely had time to find a place for everything new – we’ve been so busy. The elliptical that we all “bought each other” – it seems to be getting some use, but not by me. As for my kids, a lot of what they got was games, which I’m not leaving in their play area with all the small pieces. You know how that would end up. I will have to sit down with them and teach them the games. I’m planning on setting Tuesdays aside for that for a while, tentatively. They do play with the gifts I left in their play area.

As for me personally, I didn’t really get anything other than a couple pairs of jeans (which I’m using) and some puzzles (which will be used at extended family gatherings, eventually).

We got a lot of Wii games for Christmas. Played them at first, now we don’t. I’ll play Wipeout & Just Dance 2 if we have company over. Hunter likes when I play Wipeout. He likes to jump around when I play that one. He also kinda dances with me on Just Dance. Hunter was in LOVE with Stinky the Garbage Truck in the stores. He would even call for Stinky in the stores!! Well he got one for Christmas, played with it for the next 2 days and now it sits in his room.

    • SKL says:

I just have to know – is it stinky?

      • Jenny says:

haha Hunter loved it in the stores, because it was on display and yes it does fart!!!! ahhhh boys!!! LOL It eats stuff that you put in its mouth, like cars, and it dumps them from the garbage truck’s butt and it farts. 🙂 Great toy huh??

    • Sue says:

Is Wipeout like the Wipeout on TV? My kids would get a huge kick out of that!

    • Joy says:

Oh ish. I hate fart sounds. I would have never let that in the house. I made my kids go to their rooms if they started the farting stuff. I find it gross. It’s one of my “things” that I didn’t budge on.

      • Jason says:

How did you ever manage with two boys growing up in your house?

      • Nikki says:

LOL You must really hate when Bailey makes fart sounds with his arm pits, or even “leg pits” as he calls them.

      • Joy says:

I don’t know but they never did it. Bailey doesn’t either. Just one look with “grandma hates that” and he never did it again. I’m really easy with most things but when I enforce something, the kids seem to listen.

      • Joy says:

Whether they’re real farts or fake ones, I can’t stand the sound.

      • Joy says:

I should also state for the record that I can’t stand burps either.

        • SKL says:

Ha ha! I’m with you! I hate farts, can’t understand how people seem to think it’s a bonding experience or something. How can you just carry on a conversation when the other person just ripped one in mid-sentence?! I don’t notice it much with my kids yet, but eventually I’ll probably be one of those “go to the bathroom” types. And I don’t care who doesn’t like it.

        • Laura says:

I’m totally with both of you!! Does that make us old fuddy-duddies? Then so be it. I have an adult in my house who thinks nothing of “letting one rip” about every ten minutes. It’s beyond nasty. Somehow, it got into his head that it’s cool, or funny, or something. To me, it’s nothing but vile.

        • Joy says:

I live with someone who “lets em rip” too but he always excuses himself. Now my brother is single and he’s another story. I couldn’t live with anyone like that. If you don’t crap in the same room with someone how can you justify faring in front of someone? They both stink. So does a burp!

          • Laura says:

Ok, I have to make one caveat here… it absolutely cracks me up when my dog farts. It always surprises him, and he looks around like, “where’d THAT come from???” I know, totally juvenile, but hilarious.

For us, all of our things are still getting used. Christopher just had to have everything opened even though I tried hiding some! He’d say, where’s that box with the xyz, find it and tear into it. Trin didn’t get many toys for Christmas, but we have played all the board games and Wii games they got. I ended up buying Just Dance 2 last week and we all like it. I have and still am using the things I got. There’s only 1 present that hasn’t made it out of the box yet and that’s Trin’s sewing machine b/c we haven’t had time to sit down and figure it out, and I want to make sure she knows how to use it. She is excited to make her own stuff though. Maybe we’ll bust that out after Grandma’s birthday dinner.

  4. Laura says:

I just have to say… the way I read the following? I’m still giggling over it:

“When you first get something it’s exciting and you might use it all the time, but as time wears on, you may forget about it or just decide it wasn’t as great as you thought. Kids come to mind especially.”

No, I’ve decided to keep my kid. He’s pretty great.

  5. Laura says:

We got a Wii!! And I’m loving it. I found “GameFly” online – it’s just like Netflix, only for games, and I got a membership so we could test out some games before going out and buying them. At $50 a pop, they’re an investment. But we’re already really loving the ones that we have, and we’ve had a couple of weekend benders already.

I’m using the most excellent purse that I got, too. And Josh? He got a plethora of Lego (or is it a Gaggle of Lego? I can never remember) which he would sleep with, if I let him; he also got a DS… which he’d also take with him to bed, although I doubt he’d get much sleep.

The gift cards that I received… one is spent, and the other is waiting for me to go in to CR so I can visit the store. THey have one online, but some places, you just have to try on.

But yeah, overall, we’re using everything we got!

  6. Morocco says:

Yes, which is why I have made a goal to stop accumulating stuff!

  7. Nikki says:

We are still playing/using everything we got for Christmas. I LOVE my iPod, I use that almost everyday. We’re getting a lot of use out of all the lounge wear my mom bought us, and the slippers. All the games are still being played. I got 2 sets of nice bath towels from my mom also, so they will definitely be used for a long time. This year I was practical in my gift giving, and everything we got was practical. So, yes we are still using and plan on keep using/playing everything we got! 🙂

  8. Joy says:

This year was actually the best year I’ve had in so many years that I can’t even remember. I got the best stuff and I even made a list this year and only got one thing on it. The Rod Stewart CD thank you Nikki. It’s great and I love those old songs from the 50’s. I love the grandma frame Sue made me and I love the hot drink maker they got me for my birthday. I love the new coffee glasses from Nikki and I love my Bush book. I love the Nook Paul got me even thought it’s still giving me a headache with over use. I do need to go to the doctor.

It’s just kind of like everyone got me stuff I just love without my telling them. It’s so neat. I got such great gifts this year that I’ll be using them all for a lot of years. Everyone always says how hard I am to buy for but I don’t see it. I love everything but it’s so funny to me that the one year I made a list starting in early November and this was the one year nobody really asked and the stuff they got me was better than what I would have put on any list. How cool is that?

  9. Karen Joy says:

This will sound sad but I didnt get any christmas presents.Wait,I got a picture frame thing from a sister. Its still in the box. What my hubby and I have been doing is looking for a new leather sectional(for prob. the last year)and we found one just yesterday. So thats our cmas gifts to each other. It should be delivered by end of this week. And YES,I plan on using it and using it,lol!
