I NEVER answer our home phone. I rarely answer blocked numbers on my business phone.

I’ve begun screening more and more. Sometimes it’s because some survey company has got our number, and other times it’s just because I’m right in the middle of something and I really don’t want to talk right now. Of course, if it’s a family member, the house phone will ring, then the cell will go off, then the IM starts chirping… I can’t hide from them!

I screen my calls. Here’s why:

    1) If it’s a work matter, like to be prepared and not caught off-guard.

    2) Certain people have no boundaries. If I answer, they can ruin my day or evening.

    3) Some drug dealer with credit problems keeps giving people my phone number, so I keep getting all kinds of ridiculous calls, at all hours of the day and night.

    4) I don’t like talking on the phone anyway.

So as far as I’m concerned, voice mail was invented for a reason.

I screen them, and if it is some company calls that wants to sell something, I always say I am not authorize to talk with them, they have to call back some other time, which they never do 🙂

  6. Nikki says:

I don’t answer the 1-800 or 1-888 numbers usually, unless I’m feeling feisty and feel like telling them to take my number off their calling list for the millionth time! I refuse to pay the $5 anymore to keep them from calling. I screen if I don’t want to talk to that person at the time, but I’ll always call them back. There are people I always pick up the phone for though. Family always and certain friends.

  7. Sue says:

I don’t answer the 800, 888 #’s either. Who has time to listen to them?! Unless I have greasy fingers from cooking or am in the bathroom, I answer the phone.

  8. Joy says:

I don’t screen mine either. Even if it’s a 800 or whatever because I’ve found if you don’t, they just keep calling back until you do. Once you answer and tell them no, the computer will generate the calls and I hate the phone ringing more than taking the call. Even if I was mad at someone I’ll still answer if I hear it. I miss a lot of calls if I go to change the litter or run upstairs for something but if I hear it, I answer it.

FYI-just in case you guys didn’t know this. When you get those 800 calls or whatever, if you call that number back and it’s a charity call, it will take you to a menu where you can remove you phone number and opt out of them calling in the future. I was trying to nap one afternoon and this same place kept calling and I was never able to catch the phone so I just hit redial and it took me to a menu and they never called again.

  9. Jenny says:

We screen our calls. Usually when I see a 800 # I will push talk and hang up right away.

It’s funny this topic is being discussed right now, because I have been chided a few times in the past 18 hours for not answering my phone! Somehow they call when I am not next to it, and I don’t take it everywhere. Yesterday I got calls when I was transferring laundry, in the bathroom, picking up my kids . . . and today when I was dropping off my kids. Ha, ha. I’m actually glad I missed those calls, though! It makes my boss-free days that much less stressful.

You know what REALLY frosts my cheese? When people have call-waiting AND voice mail, and they answer the call-waiting anyway. Why do they do that? The call will go to voice mail if you don’t answer it (and why it beeps the call-waiting when the voice mail exists is beyond me anyway), and then you can check your messages and deal with that phone call later. AAK! pet peeve.

  12. Morocco says:

    Screen, definitely!

  13. Phyllis says:

I screen, but this is a newer number and not many folks have it anyway. If it comes up private or blocked there is no way I’m answering it. Once you answer those calls it seems like those numbers just keep calling forever. They can leave a message but almost never do, and that’s just fine with me. Friends and family ALWAYS get answered.

    I definitely screen!
