What do you think? Should fat people be allowed to sue the food industry? Or, do they deserve all the blame for their weight problems?

I feel that suing someone for doing something you know is bad for you should be illegal. I knew smoking was bad for me but I chose to do it. Who’s fault is that besides mine? NOBODY’S!!!!
Cannot agree more with you, Joy!
I heard a guy on TV say something like,
“If you just stuff yourself with food so much that you can hardly move… just one time you won’t gain wait. But if you repeatedly eat more than your body needs you will eventually get fat.”
Should women who do “Chubby Porn” be required to give a portion of their ill-gotten gains to the junk food industry?
What in the heck is “chubby porn?”
I don’t think you really want an answer to that, do you???
Now I’m not sure. Is it dirty?
“Dirty?” Well you could always Google it. But yeh, I do think its a bit dirty.
I think it’s sad that it’s even come to this. The only (ONLY) way I can see a “you got me fat” lawsuit being sensible is if it’s a case like cigarettes were when they first came out, with doctors going on TV saying how great they were. And then we come to find out that they’re death sticks. I cannot imagine a single instance where that would apply to food, though.
I am not a small girl, and I know (mostly) how I got this way. As much as I’d like to blame McDonald’s for having really good fries, it’s me who drives over there and plops down my cash for them.
Honestly, I somewhat blame the judges/legal system for allowing this crap to go forward in the first place. If the first judge to preside over the case threw it out, if the lawyers said, “no, honey, you’re not fat because of McDonald’s”, then people wouldn’t be so quick to jump on the bandwagon.
No, they shouldn’t be able to sue. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY people!!!!!!!
Ditto to what Sue said!!!
Well, would it not make more sense for fat people to sue companies that sell so-called diet food? I mean, here you have all these products advertised with claims that they are going to make you skinny, when the fact is, eating is eating is eating. Most people who “diet” still end up overweight. But, I’ve never seen a McD’s commercial that implied that super-size meals are gonna make people healthy and skinny.
I have known since primary school that eating too much makes people fat, and that being overweight is not a good thing. My kids are 4 and they have a fair amount of knowledge about healthy choices, particularly when it comes to nutrition and exercise. You can tell me you find cholesterol confusing. But nobody is going to tell me they thought fries were health food.
Also, if you are overweight, you now it. And it doesn’t happen overnight. There are a lot of food choices between noticing oncoming love handles and needing gastric bypass surgery. And between those times, every choice to eat fatty/sugary food is a choice to get fatter instead of thinner.
There are plenty of people who eat fast food and are pretty healthy. So obviously, offering the food is not per se bad for customers’ health. So proving proximate cause would be impossible anyway, unless the fast food chain tied the person down and forced him to eat only their food for long periods of time.
Then you have the whole slippery slope issue. It’s not like fast food is the only place people get fatty food. Most restaurant food isn’t “healthy.” A lot of prepared / frozen food from the grocery store is not “healthy.” School lunches are not “healthy.” And most meat-and-potatoes home-cooked meals aren’t great for weight loss, either. Should I sue my parents since they fed me pizza the last two times I ate there? Should I sue my sister because the stuff she cooks for me usually contains red meat? McDonald’s is the least of my worries. So this could easily get very ridiculous.
What a strange world we live in, that this kind of law would even be needed.
Personal responsibility! I don’t know if they still do it, but a while back you couldn’t order at a fast food place without being asked if you wanted to “super-size” it. Ok, folks, the key words here are “no thanks”! We’re all aware when we’re going in that we have already made an active choice to eat what we’ve got a taste for. Healthy or not! For instance, I know that when I pull in Wendy’s parking lot I’m going to be eating a double stack, plain, well done along with a baked potato with just butter, LOTS of butter. Is this healthy? Who knows, but when I’m there this is what I CHOOSE to eat. My choice….no one is there shoving the food down my throat! I’m doing the chewing and swallowing myself! Sooooo, I agree that people should not be allowed to sue restaurants, but do we really need to have a law preventing this on the books? What a sorry position we are in nowadays! Heaven forbid that anyone take responsibility for their actions! It seems. sometimes, like the entire world is reverting to childhood where things were ALWAYS someone else’s fault! (So and so made me do it.) Pretty pathic! 😦
Sometimes being fat or obese is hereditary . How can one sue a company for his /her eating habits.
Btw how many of us have heard that person is “big boned?” Has ANYONE ever seen a skeleton of “big bones?” Anyone at all?
Well I don’t know about “big boned,” but some folks definitely have broader shoulders, etc., which seems to justify a bit more weight. However, it does seem that some folks confuse broad shoulders with fat arses.
My older kid has much narrower shoulders than her younger sister. She could get away with wearing size 2 if it weren’t for her length. In fact, she does have a few size 2 dresses that she wears with leggings. Her sister would look ridiculous even trying to squeeze into those clothes.
