All the time. I am terrible at remembering adults’ names. I can remember their kids’ names, ages, and birth dates, but it takes me forever to learn a business acquaintance’s name. Help!

  2. Sue says:

    I can’t remember!

  3. Laura says:

I’ve gotten to the point where i tell people, “don’t be surprised if I ask you two or three times what your name is. It’s not you, I can remember a lot of things, but I cannot remember names.” Most people are cool with it, because they’re the same way!

I just got done reading that Face Blindness book (haven’t taken it down, because I haven’t started reading anything else). Anyway, she says that lots of people have trouble remembering names, because they don’t make sense. For example, you can remember that a “car” is a “car” because they all look essentially the same – four wheels, frame, doors, window, trunk, hood. They all have these components in essentially the same place. But a name… that’s a random title for a bunch of things that look the same. Humans all have the same basic features, and yet, each one is uniquely named, and the brain has difficulty associating a different name with the same object over and over again. THAT’S why you have trouble remembering names.

Also? The kids are usually more important to us, so we make more effort.

    nah I don’t think so

  5. mssc54 says:

Sure, but fortunately my memory is so bad I can’t remember how embarrassng it was.

  6. Nikki says:

I don’t think so. This happened to me recently though. A dad with his son came in to batting practice one day, and he said something to the affect of, “Hey Nicole, how ya been? Bailey excited to start the season?” I had NO clue who he was!!! I played it off well, gave a very generic answer. Then when my friend Nikki came in, I told her about it. We were all in a big group and she introduced herself to him, so then I had his name! Come to find out, his son played T-ball with Bailey! How do you remember that???

I can’t remember ever being embarrassed from not remembering. But then again, my memory is not that great!

  7. Phyllis says:

No, I’m like Laura, when I can’t come up with a name, I usually admit it. I’m better with faces so sometimes I can get away with winging it when I’m talking with someone until their name comes to me.
