I generally get along very well with my “opposites.” My problem is that I’m such an extreme case, those who are truly my opposite tend to have “issues.” Which make it difficult for us as a couple to be liked / taken seriously. Oh, well.

Romantically? I’ve never been able to work with the opposites thing. The attraction is definitely there, but long term? Doesn’t seem to work in my case.

Friendships are a completely different matter, though. Those last a looong time. Probably because we are so different and help each other grow and see life situations through a different perspective.

Totally agreeing with you, Phyllis! I have a friend and she is so different than I am but we have been friends for over 28 years. And indeed, we help each other in constantly growing in having a wider view than our own thoughts and beliefs.
My husband an I are very much the same personalities and we get along very, very well 🙂

I think that depends on the person. For me, I get along better with people that are more like me, than not. I guess I get along with most everybody, but to have a close relationship, we have to be more alike than different. My best friend and I are total opposites. And I think it only works for us now, because we live so far a apart and only communicate over the internet, or phone. If we lived by each other, she’d probably drive me nuts! But I have changed a LOT and she hasn’t really. We used to be 2 peas in a pod.

My husband. We more alike than different, when it comes to the important things. We like to do the same things, we want the same things out of life. We get along very well…now! 😉 Personality wise, we are pretty different though. Which works for us too. He pushes me out of my little box, and sometimes I have to reel him in!

I think that they do. They might not always work, but they definitely attract! Toby’s opposite from me in some ways, but then we’re similar in others. I think we’ve been a good balance for each other!

  5. Joy says:

I think it would be really hard to live side by side with someone for over 30 years if you were “really” opposites. Paul and I have so much in common that we live together very nicely. I don’t know if I would want to live with someone who differed from me in important ways. I know for sure I’d hate to live with someone that thought different politically. I can’t even imagine. My dad and his wife are different parties and they just don’t talk about it but I’m not sure I could do that. If you could be a fly in the room when Paul and I get to ranting about our current administration, you’d get an earful and a lot of F bombs. LOL!!! Also, could you imagine living with a Packer fan? Since Laura’s gone, OR A BEAR’S fan???????? LOL!!!!

I think an opposite for a friend would be fun. Like Nikki said, it’s someone to get you to think outside your box or comfort zone.
