Question of the Day

Ten states, including Iowa, Illinois, and Ohio, ban consumer fireworks. Do you agree or disagree with this ban?Why/Why not?

(“consumer fireworks” are defined as “the ones you can shoot off”, and generally don’t include things like smoke bombs, snakes, and sparklers, although those are banned in some states as well)

I agree that these states have banned consumer fireworks.

I disagree. It is just another infringement on our right for “the persuit of happiness.” Some people are just happy blowing up their money and having it look purty doing it.

Well, when I was growing up there were a lot of young people blowing their hands off. So yeah, some of the fireworks should probably not be handled by just anyone. Whether the ban goes too far, I don’t know – I am not really up on what is and isn’t banned.

Oh, and several years ago, we were watching the neighboring town’s fireworks and they suddenly stopped. I just knew something bad had happened. Next day I learned that a firework had flown right into a little girls’ face and blew her brains out. And that was with someone licensed to shoot them off. One year my kid sister got her leg burned by falling fireworks at the county fair, and another year my hair caught on fire from the city fireworks. So I’m not too eager to see fireworks in the hands of unlicensed drunk partyers. Sorry.

I don’t know why they ban them since people just go buy them across the border anyways. Like here in MN we just go across to WI, ND or SD. Why buy fireworks when you can’t buy the pretty ones?

If it is the consumers safety that they are concerned about then why don’t they come up with some sort of fireworks safety training, like they have for firearms. Then you can have a permit that says you are properly trained to use these, then maybe our government would have less of a deficit and wouldn’t have the need to shutdown…..
