T.G.I.F.

Happy Friday, everyone!  I don’t have too much to report from the week so I’ll just hand it off to you! How was your week? Any fun weekend plans?! Me? Nothing but me, my 2 guys and our boat…and hopefully a lot of fish! And, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, then I might be able to get my husband to do a few things around the house! I should get on that “honey do” list, just in case.

Well, it’s been a busy week, but not as horrible as the preceding couple of months. Very little time for fooling around, though. The work just keeps coming.

This week Miss E wins the gimp award. On Tuesday I got a call from her school because she woke from nap with her eye all swollen (probably a bug bite or some dirt), and at recess got a big welt on her arm from a bug bite, and when we got home she fell on the cement while running downhill to the mailbox. Got scraped up in several places. She was then feasted on by mosquitos in our backyard. She is still hurting and taking it a bit easy. We skipped swimming because the scrapes need some more healing.

I’ve been working with Miss A (mainly) on bike riding. Mostly just back and forth on our patio, since we live on a hill and that’s the only flat spot. As with many things, she’s inconsistent. The funny thing is that going in one direction, she can go a good 25 feet (then stops because she would go down the ravine otherwise). In the other direction over the same ground, she gets scared and stops before going 10 feet. I also noticed that she is less likely to swerve off course if I put a few things along the side of the path. Of course learning to ride a bike is 90% mental. I remember when I was 4 and I was afraid to have both feet off the ground at the same time. Eventually the motivation to be a “big kid” overcame the fear.

Come to think of it, I may know why she does better in the one direction. At the point where I let go, there’s a maroon wall to her right, and that probably helps her sense of direction. In the other direction, everything becomes more open around the point where I let go. I should keep in mind that she has vision issues, and lots of kids with those issues have trouble learning to ride bikes. Hmm. Maybe I should draw some dark chalk lines to outline the path she wants her bike to go, or something. I also need to get back into the vision therapy exercises with her.

Lately the girls tell me every day that some boy or other kissed them and whom they’re going to marry and all that. Miss E said, “I don’t think I’ll go to college when I grow up. I’ll just get married.” It’s funny because her tone of voice showed she’d given it some serious thought, LOL. She’s 4 and already looking forward to being done with school.

Yesterday the girls built a wood project at a Home Depot workshop, and I was pretty impressed with their first attempt at carpentry. They had the patience to listen to instructions, take turns, and stick with it until it was done right. They also had the sense to not smash fingers with the hammer or do anything foolish with the nails or glue. I wish I had more time to work with them on stuff like that.

So this weekend, our only “plans” outside of work are to go to the zoo on Saturday evening and church Sunday morning. I thought the fair was this weekend, but now I think it’s next weekend.

Oh well, so I’m pretty boring this week. I hope everyone else has a great weekend!

    • Joy says:

I think that building thing from Home Depot is cool. So often people think girls don’t like things like that but I always loved to hammer and fix things but we were herded to “home ec” and the boys got the “shop” class. I never got that.

Good luck with the bike riding. I think you’re right about the wall and the wide open spaces. It might be harder for her to concentrate with the world to look at.

We just have my sister’s wedding and the county fair. Trinity did awesome on her projects so that was great to see. Here’s hoping the shoes I ordered get here in time tomorrow for the afternoon wedding! LOL! Saturday we’re going back to the fair with the relatives from out of town and Sunday will hopefully be quiet. I have a baby shower on Sunday, but our friend had the baby today (4 weeks early) so I don’t know what the plan is for Sunday!

    • SKL says:

Good luck to the baby! I know, it’s weird when you can’t welcome a baby in the usual way. We never really did any of the new baby stuff for Miss G. Just prayed and prayed some more. Now she’s in quarantine until who knows when. Oh well, I’m sure we’ll make up for it eventually.

I just got back from my check up with the oral surgeon. I’m still so sore and not sleeping…he said it wasn’t just a difficult extraction, it was HORRIBLE! He put a strip of gauze that was loaded with medicine and stuffed it in the hole, and I have to go back Monday so they can take that out and put a new one in. This is ending up to be more difficult than I imagined.

    Good morning to me! ugh….

    • Sue says:

      😦 Well that stinks!

    • Jenny says:

thats what I ended up getting when I had 2 dry sockets. The medicated gauze that tastes gross! But as soon as that was stuffed in there it was immediate relief for me. Then I was going every 2 days for new ones. So pretty soon you’ll be feeling better!!

      • Nikki says:

That’s how it was for me too. I let out a huge sigh of relief!!! But dang does that stuff taste NASTY! lol He said to come back Monday and probably again Wednesday. I never got dry sockets though, thankfully!

        • Jenny says:

thats all I got for my dry sockets was that gauze stuffed in the holes. But if you’re in that much pain sounds to me like what I was going through.

          • Nikki says:

He said it’s because he really had to get in there and work hard to get them out. I actually still have a piece of my wisdom tooth in there, it was too close to a nerve-he left it alone.

    • Phyllis says:

Aw, Nikki, I’m sorry to hear that! Really, I think there’s nothing worse than mouth pain! 😦 I sure hope the medicine is working for you! Wouldn’t you think that taking out the darn tooth would be all that was needed? That’s a total bummer.

  4. Joy says:

Oh jeez, sorry Nikki. I thought you were feeling good.

    • Nikki says:

I have good moments. I don’t like to complain. When someone asks me how I’m feeling, chances are I’ll just say, I’m fine. I save the complaining for Jason! I might feel better if I could sleep! I wake up at 2am-4am-6am….he did tell me to get Advil, instead of the Tylenol I was using. I picked some up, and some Advil PM. Hopefully, I can sleep tonight!

      • Laura says:

Yeah, the Advil should help. Like Joy said… it’s got an anti-inflammatory in it, where the Tylenol just masks the pain. Both are good for their own thing, and if you are still in pain with the Advil, talk with your Doc… you can take both together, because they work differently.

    • Joy says:

My doctor told me to use Advil too instead of Tylenol. He said it’s got an anti-inflammatory in it. Everything does get better with sleep. I know Sunday night was the first night I slept after last week of not. I sure hope you feel better.

  5. Joy says:

Oh yippee, it’s Friday!! LOL!! I’m not looking forward to the weekend. It’s been such a long week. The whole stock market stuff has Paul depressed which makes me nervous and it’s just been a long week! I was really looking forward to Julie’s wedding and I even bought a cute new dress and now I can’t even wear it. I have two bruises on my upper arm and it looks like I got into a fight with a grizzly bear so now I’m scrambling for something else which means…freaking jeans because that’s all I have.

    I just feel so blah!

I did get outside for most of the day yesterday and I did go running which felt really good and I mowed the front yard and did water aerobics. We didn’t even go to the fair like we’ve done every year since we moved here because if you can’t eat, it’s too small to make it worth it to go. By the time you’ve walked it, it’s only half an hour so I want to skip it this year. I don’t want to lose the same pounds twice. I’m getting ready to go out now and swim again. The pool really needs vacuuming so I’ll be able to do that. We have so darn many mosquitoes that unless you’re moving around, you can’t stand being out. I tried filling bird feeders yesterday and you have to fill one and RUN like crazy. Once they find you, you’re toast!!

    Have a good weekend all.

    • Nikki says:

If you could find a white 3/4 sleeve-light sweater, that would look cute over that dress. But then you’d have to go shopping. 😦 I’m sorry, I know how excited you were to wear that and it is SO cute!!

    • Joy says:

I know! I’ll be able to get away with wearing jeans but that’s not the point. I hit myself on those damn chairs on the deck and the other arm I got hit with the back door. I thought the bruises would be gone by today. They’re almost 2 weeks old! I moved the table way out so the chairs aren’t so close to the table and aren’t so close together. I’m very disappointed.

    • Jenny says:

hmm well maybe my mom has a shawl or something. Maybe you should give her a call and ask!! You really should wear your new dress that you bought. Doesn’t Sue have any type of shawl that just goes over the shoulders? I don’t. So I’m not any help.

      • Nikki says:

I looked at Target for something and found nothing! I would have driven it out to you! I want you to wear that dress!!!! lol

      • Joy says:

LOL!! Don’t worry you guys. I’ll wear it sometime. I’m going to keep it. If I cover up the top, it’ll hide the nice crochet of the neckline and back. I hate to do that. It’s why I bought the dress. Ever since this doctor put me on the aspirin a day this has happened to me much worse than it used to. If I even brush up against something I’ll get a bruise so I need to go see him. I’m still wearing orange so all’s good. Thanks Nikki.

        • Phyllis says:

Are you using just a baby aspirin, 84mg I think it is. You really shouldn’t be bruising all that much. I’d mention it to the dr. next time you’re in there.

I’ve been pretty busy with work this work… even worked last Sunday! But it cost them.

Today I went out at 8am to cut the grass and got the back yard done before our oldest daughter got here. Everyone went over to the pool while I spent over three hours cleaning the seats, floors and floor mats in her van. If anyone has a problem with water retention just go out and cut the grass.

Don’t think we have anything planned for the weekend. My goal is to rest.

  7. Phyllis says:

Can you say “chaos”? That’s what my week has been. MI family got in Sat after being up 3 days straight, so the adults slept until the kids bedtime (around 8:30 pm). Sunday was a nothing day cause they were still soooo tired. Sunday nite spent moving bedroom furniture, toys, and clothes in from the truck and my stuff from the rooms out to the truck so everything could go into the storage unit Mon. Today’s Sat and we FINALLY have the house mostly back in a livable condition.

Now the adults are looking for jobs and I’m sure praying they find something quickly because my part-time check isn’t going to stretch to care for 5 extra people. It may be rough for a few weeks, but we’ll get through it.

Tonight my daughter, son-in-law and I have tickets to see Joel Osteen so that’ll be a fun time. We’ve been looking forward to it for a month now. Other than that, it’s life as usual.a

  8. Laura says:

Well. I *didn’t* have anything planned for this weekend, and now all of a sudden, it’s all filled up.
This morning, I dropped Josh off at a friend’s house for a playdate… He didn’t know it, but I arranged for the older girls to teach him to ride his bike! I’ve been a “bad mom”, and trying to help him do it, and I run along side him, and he does great. I let go, keep running by him, and he’s fine for about 5 feet, but then he gets scared, lets go of the handle bars, twists around and grabs me! And then, of course, the bike swerves and goes into something. So I figured, maybe if my friend Chuck helped me, we could tag-team. I run a bit with Josh, then he takes over, etc… but he said, No, just bring Josh over. My girls taught Ian (who is Josh’s age) how to ride, they can teach Josh, too. So they’re doing that now. I just got an update. Aside from his bike being too small for him (he’s getting a new one next week from Grandpa), he’s gone 2 car lengths. Fingers crossed!! I hope he goes the rest of the way!!!

Tomorrow morning, a friend’s daughter is competing in some gaming with her pony, and we were invited to come and watch. I soooo miss horse-showing, so we’re going to go watch for a while. Then, in the afternoon, Morgan (one of the girls teaching Josh today) is getting a surprise birthday party in the park. So we’re going to that. And THEN… tomorrow evening, we have a Scout Leader’s Meeting.

it’s gonna be crazy around here for a while…

    • Laura says:

Well, the bike thing didn’t go so well… He’s too big for his bike, so whenever he tries to ride, he ends up hitting arms with knees! But he managed a couple of car-lengths on his own, so it’s progress. We’re heading in to Chi soon, and there’s a “new” bike waiting there for him. Hopefully, he’ll be up and riding by then.

      • SKL says:

My youngest seems too big for hers as well (it’s a 13″). Miss A is petite so it still fits her fine. She is doing better – but still not independent yet. Miss E seems like she could care less, and I don’t mind waiting to start with her, partly because I’m about to have a heart attack just chasing one kid’s bike. (Great exercise, though!) But if she was ready to start riding, I’m not sure how well she’d do with the awkwardness of the bike size. I’ll raise the seat and handlebars and see if that helps. I don’t want to buy another transitional bike, and I don’t think she’s quite big enough for a 20″.

WIth Miss A being so far behind Miss E in academics, it will be nice for her to have one big thing she mastered first. Though yesterday, I got the first tiny hint that she’s understanding “sounding out” a word. Slowly but surely . . . .

      • SKL says:

By the way, my niece didn’t get her training wheels off (from her 20″ bike) until she was 9. She too lived on a dirt road.

It does sound like Josh is pretty much ready. My kid brother used to borrow his neighbor’s bike until he got his own for his 7th birthday. (We lived on a highway so my mom didn’t trust him to have a bike before that.) He always used to wipe out on his freind’s bike, but he was learning. His new bike was designed for smaller kids (which he was) and he was able to ride it the first minute he tried. So, good luck!

    • Jason says:

Hey Laura what kind of showing did you use to do? We went to a horse show today and everytime I watch it makes me sad that I don’t do it anymore. I used to do the games, barrels, poles, etc… you know what I’m talking about!!
