Mostly, I’m a non-hugger. I grew up in a family where we weren’t very physically demonstrative at all. And it was just bizarre for me when I married – Steve’s family are MAJOR huggers. They don’t consider having said “hello” to you unless they’ve hugged you. I’ve had them hunt me down and pounce on me at parties…. ok, they’re not that bad. But they hug like crazy, and it’s taken a LOT for me to get used to it.

I’m getting better, though, and will hug (especially) people that I haven’t seen in a long time.

Of course, if someone “needs a hug”, I’m there. That, to me, is different than greetings.

I wasn’t a hugger when I was younger. In my later life I have come to accept that when someone hugs you, it’s the Lord’s way of reaching out to touch us and let us know He’s there. I no longer resist giving or accepting hugs.

I too was not raised in a “hugging” family and I don’t crave that at all. The only people I ever really loved to hug (as far back as I can remember) were my much younger siblings, nieces / nephews, and of course my kids.

I try to accommodate huggers but I always feel very awkward – like there’s a right way to hug which I never learned.

That’s a cute photo, by the way.

  5. I am a HUGE hugger. I’m one of those people who will go hug the people standing with pink shirts and “FREE HUGS” shirts.

Ilana, I hope you come back and see this. I’ve been trying to make comments on your blog but I think they might be going in the spam folder. Could you please go check for me?

Starla too. I’ve been trying to get in contact with her but her email must have changed. Her spam folder’s got to be full too with my comments. Dang WordPress.

I am huge hugger, too. Saying bye to someone, usually includes a hug from me. If I go a while without seeing a friend, they get a hug. I wasn’t raised in a affectionate household, at all. I very rarely got hugged. I made sure to change that when I had my own child. He’s affectionate, and I like to think I had something to do with that.

  7. Joy says:

I’m not really a big hugger of people. I do love to hug kids though. My parents were very affectionate so I’m not sure why I don’t enjoy it more but I just usually don’t. If I haven’t seen someone in a long time or they just need a hug, that different but I just don’t go up and hug people. Sometimes I wish I did.

  8. Sue says:

I’m a hugger, but not of everyone!

Oh, I’m a big-time hugger much to the disgust of some people – usually my almost grown up grandsons. My Dad was a hugger and I grew up with it and loved every hug I got from him. I miss his hugs every day.
