Do you have a soft heart? Do you feel bad when people lose? I’m not talking about things like someone losing their job or anything important but things like games. Competitions. I always do and I wonder if other people do it as well.
I LOVE Dancing With The Stars. I’ve always loved dancing and ballroom dancing is so pretty and fun to watch so I’ve never missed a season. Sure, I’ve loved some contestants more than others but every single time someone is booted off the show, part of me feels bad for them. I personally can’t stand Denise Richard’s. No, I don’t know her personally but there’s nothing whatsoEVaaa that I like about her. To me anyway, she just seems like some kind of a hanger on-er. A gold digger if you will. Yes, I’m judging but it’s only in my little head and my own little world so my judging isn’t hurting anyone. She’s getting divorced, gets back together, has another baby and leaves before the baby is born. She then hooks up with her BBF’s husband and causes a stink there and her poor beautiful girls always look so sad. Always with pacifiers and blankets shielding them. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen those two little dolls smiling and to top it off, she put them on that stupid reality show “It’s complicated.”
Anyway, I love DWTS and when I found out she was going to be on, let’s just say I was less than thrilled. So why is it then, I felt bad when she got the boot last week?? Why am I like this? I actually felt bad for her!
I’m like this with the World Series and the Stanley Cup playoffs and even the Olympics. I can honestly say the only time I didn’t feel bad for a team was in the 1998 Superbowl when the Denver Bronco’s beat the Packers.
Am I the only one who does this? Do you feel bad when people lose even though you didn’t want them to win?
It depends on their attitude. If they are really full of hope like a little kid, it is hard to see them lose. If they are arrogant or unethical, it is not so hard.
I am not fond of competition since it usually involves someone losing or being hurt. I know it’s part of life but I rarely find it fun.
I think of folks like the Williams sisters or the young girls in the Olympic gymnastics teams. They are all so talented, they all have so much heart. I want them all to win! And when I watch football and one player just shines and gives his all, even though a fumble or interception by some other guy can make it all for naught. Yeah, I do feel bad for the loser at times like that. Or anytime that someone is really enthusiastic about something, only to have their dream abruptly cut off.
This reminds me of something that happened last December. A family worked on a very stressful adoption of a 5-year-old orphan for years. Finally the adoption was approved and the little girl was to come home within a couple weeks, just before Christmas. The family finally had the opportunity to set up her bedroom, fill her closet with clothes, purchase lovely presents and decorate the house extra cheerfully. Imagine it! Then one morning they got a call saying that the little girl and her entire foster family had been murdered in their beds. It makes you really wonder. I know this isn’t about “competition,” but it’s about working toward a goal for years and feeling so ecstatic about approaching the finish line.
Of course, people who have “the right stuff” learn from their losses and move on. I think I avoid a lot of these challenges because I’m not sure I have that “right stuff.” I do love watching a truly talented player or dancer, though.
I had to really think about feeling bad for those I don’t want to win-but yeah, I have a really big heart too and I get misty eyed when anyone loses OR wins!! I am so emotional, especially after having my baby, I am even MORE emotional and didn’t think it was possible!! I cry at commericals all the time- Eric laughs at me. It is funny cuz he will look over at me sometimes to see because he knows if it is a sentimental moment I will get emotional!! Nice post. Most woman are emotional, but some are way more.
I do feel bad when someone is kicked off of DWTS. I do not particularly care for Denise Richards either but when you can tell someone is out of their element and tries their best, it does make me feel bad when they get the boot.
I must be the only one here who is not a softy! For every competition there is a winner and a loser, that’s just the way it is. I think it is actually important to lose, especially with kids. Losing teaches you how to better yourself so you can win next time and how to cope when things don’t go your way.
Just my little opinion. 🙂
I agree losing is important to teach that! It is good to lose and the way of life, but I still get emotional over it!
Oh, I’m a total softie, just like you. I mean, it’s easy to feel bad for people when they lose and get brutally humiliated, like on shows like American Idol with that Simon bastard. But I also feel bad for them when they’re let down nicely like in America’s Next Top Model! It doesn’t matter if I liked them or not, it’s just that I guess I, like you, have an over-abundance of sympathy and empathy on things like this.
Most of the time, I don’t feel bad. Like Just a Mom said… it’s a competition, and there are going to be winners and losers.
There are exceptions, though.
I cried, railed, nearly threw stuff at my tv screen when Tara Lipinski beat Michelle Kwan for the Figure Skating Gold (Nagano, ’98). That, I felt, was a robbery – Tara had more jumps, but Michelle had the better, more polished, and technically more difficult program. I still believe Tara won because she was younger and ‘cute’, and here was yet another chance to “make history”. Naaah…. not still involved in it. Not at all.
I cheered when DWTS finally voted off that Cheetah Girl. Didn’t think she belonged there in the first place, because she was a professional dancer. Also, I didn’t like that she hip-hopped her way through the competition, until she got the boot.
I like Simon. I don’t think he’s evil, cranky, or anything else. Imagine being in his shoes, hearing THOUSANDS of people every week who can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but believe that they’re what the rock world is waiting for. He’s honest, and sometimes the truth hurts. The one who makes my teeth hurt is Paula. She’s too nice. Some people need that splash of ice water in the face to yank them off their high horse.
I do feel bad for the “losers” when both individuals/teams fight hard and play well. I really don’t feel like, in this situation, there is a “loser”… as Hot Rod says, “he just won last”.
(Of course, I ALWAYS rejoice when the Bears trounce the Vikings…)
I was just waiting for you to bring up the Bears and Vikings!!!
Had to get The Boy up and out the door to school, otherwise I’d have done it sooner!!!
Looks like we got a new QB. And they traded Orton for him. And KEPT “Sexy Rexy”. gag. Wish they’d trade the coach instead…. *sigh*
I thought of you when that news broke yesterday. I really hope it works out for you. You gave up so much to get him. We really REALLY need a good QB but I wouldn’t want to give up what you had to. He might do really well there.
I feel bad when someone is getting the boot and losses.i would not want to be on national tv for the whole world to see.But to lose in life is a growing experience. It hopefully pushes them to keep exalling in other areas of life and to no that to even have come that far is a great accomplishment.
Yes I often feel the same way. I use to play tennis with a girl and she loved to win and I could really care less so I just played but I didn’t bring out all the stops to win. She just cared more about winning then I did. I did not let her win I just didn’t go crazy trying to beat her. I often feel bad if I have won #1 at something because I don’t want other people to feel bad. I also don’t appreciate when women steal their bff married men. I’m not a big fan about that ie Angie and Jen and Brad and also Dennis Richards. I’m still a little irritated about that.
I don’t watch this show but I feel like that with sports the most. We watch boys little league world series every year. I get so excited for the kids that win but I almost want to cry the ones that lost. Even with MLB, I get sad for the losers even when the team I like wins.
I’m NOT a fan of this Denise chick. I think those kids have been through enough, then she throws her/their life on air for all to see. Not cool as far as I’m concerned. I think she’s just grasping on to any kind of fame she can get.
honestly? Not usually. Compassion for competition is not a strong asset of mine. If you get into a dual you gotta have balls enough to walk away the loser right?
I am with Just a Mom on this one. 🙂
I would rather watch “Dancing With The Scars.”
A show with individuals whom have had major surgeries and demonstrate how they have overcome their challenges.
🙂
I’m with JAM and JJ, too.
That’s probably why I don’t like competitive sports. I always feel too bad for the losers. I always encouraged my kids to take music in school rather than sports. My son did decide to join little league and of course I went to every practice and game but I hated it when his team lost and I hated it when the other team lost. He’s a fisherman now. I can deal with that. My daughter joined band and played the flute. That was cool too.
off topic but I LOVE your Chicken picture @ the top!!!!
Thanks DM. I just got it in an email from my brother. I have a “rooster” obsession.
LOL I’m thinking those other chickens are gonna flip the board out from under his ass!….OR
they are saying..”You little prick you better run and run fast and far!!!”
Only you jj!! LOL!!!!
